Find Combination Prozac Wellbutrin in Questions
Has anyone had success with combing Prozac with Wellbutrin for treatment of depression? I'm wondering if combining the two would help with the fatique and lethargy that accompanies major depression. The Prozac (fluoxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), while Wellbutrin (bupropion) acts on dopamine and norepinephrine. I was hoping for some feedback from anyone who has taken this combination, as I intend to discuss this option wit my MD. What do you all think? Any comments, experiences, and opinions would be very much appreciated.

ghost replied: "They are not meant to be combined. And all anti-depressants are unhealthy."

man or woman? replied: "No, Prozac made me got crazy, a state that included my depression, but was worse than depression because I had energy, so much that I was accused of taking amphetamines."

hazeleyedbeauty1967 replied: "Are you trying to kill yourself? I hope not. DO NOT MIX ANY ANTIDEPRESSANTS. Talk to your doctor. Prozac is pretty powerful on its own. Wellbutrin is mild but does the job by itself as well. Do not have a doctor put you on Paxil, it will give you suicidal tendencies."

JB81 replied: "Anti-depressants are not meant to be combined. One thing that might help is combining an anti-depressant with an anti-anxiety medication, depending on your symptoms. Sometimes these medications can have side effects (like fatigue) but should go away after a few weeks of taking the normal dose. Also, if you have or have ever had an eating disorder do not take Wellbutrin. It can cause seizures. On a side note, do not listen to people who say that anti-depressants are bad for you or don't work. They help many people. I have also heard people say negative things about Prozac. Prozac affects everyone differently. Where it might make one person "crazy" it can really help another person."

I heard that there can be very serious side effects with both prozac and wellbutrin, is this true ? I have been prescribed to take both wellbutrin and prozac together. I just heard the other day that there are serious side effects such as seizures and even coma. I am starting to worry about this combination. I thought that the drugs were working but now I'm skeptical about these side effects.

*Cole* replied: "dont let what you heard affect you physically... i have had pre ions that werent supposed to be taken together, but sometimes a lower dose of one or the other wont have a reaction. BE SURE ,though, that your doctor knows you are taking both and the milligrams of each one (if 2 different doctors prescribed them to you)"

huggywell replied: "Every medication has side effects, the thing is to look at what is worse, the condition or taking a small chance on the side effects. I know I prefer to have my condition under control. Dont worry about the side effects, they are uncommon. Read your patient information leaflets that you get with the pills, they usually classify the side effects into Common, rare, and very rare. I bet the coma and seizure comes under very rare (1 chance in 100,000) I dont know about compatibility of the 2 meds but of different doctors prescribed them for you I would suggest you see one of the docs and point out the combination and ask if its OK. Or ask a pharmacist at your local chemist shop."

Frank replied: "Your physician should have informed you of potential side effects, and the pharmacist as well. Yes, there are serious side-effects ranging from seizures, coma, psychotic reactions and even suicidal tendencies. However as a physician, I don't know your clinical history and don't choose to criticize his judgment but you need to talk to him to find his justifications for the medications. I am of the old school of medicine where less drugs are better for the patient. I suggest asking your pharmacist for a package insert for ProZac...this will details all the know side effects and then do the same for Wellbutrin...both will show side effects and percentages and well as incompatibilities with other drugs. Many physicians tend to blanket conditions with different drugs (or as us older quacks called it...shot-gun treatment) rather than specific diagnosis and specific treatment. It's your life we are talking about...be an informed patient!"

What side affects can occur by taking a high dose of Prozac and Wellbutrin together?? I have been on antidepresants for years and nothing has helped! I have been really thinking about electroconvulsive therapy, I have experienced several major life stresses and I am stuck on anger which has been very self destructive. Has anyone had a bad reaction mentally when taking a combination of these 2 drugs? Has there been any success in shock treatment in reducing anger? Is it really only a short term solution and is it worth the side affects of the treaments?

Meredith M replied: "beware of heart problems if you take those together. Talk to your doctor about lexapro"

Peachy replied: "Forget the ECT... too risky. The side affects of large doses of those two drugs will just turn you into a zombie. What you need is some serious restructuring of your thought patterns... ie cognitive therapy. If the meds aren't working and you're having anger issues, more drugs is not going to help. ECT will really mess you up. It will wreck your memory and leave you permanently screwed up. (I met such folks while I was in group therapy and boy, do they wish they could turn back the clock). Here's a great book that literally saved my life and cured me of depression (for over 18 months, anyway): If you want to try cognitive therapy without the book, this might help: Cognitive therapy helped me where no other doctors or medication could. Here's my story:"

Shannon V replied: "you are taking all of this under the direction of a doctor. i would talk to him and let him know how you are feeling about taking the two antidepressants there are many new ones out on the market that are excellent. have you tried anger mangement classes sometimes talking out what is making you so angry can help. i would not consider ect unless that is yours and the doctors last resort."

Jamaison D replied: "It was not prozac, it was Paxil and Wellbutrin, and to make a long story short, I ended up having 10 Grand Mal Seizures with-in 17 days. And if you have a seizure and your Dr. notes it, you will lose you Drivers License for 6 years from the time of your last seizure. Also, when you have a seizure No Dr. will take you off your medication, cause it is a liability. You can work thru the anger..."

Ebee replied: "First off, ECT is not prescribed anymore and has not been a treatment since the late 70's. It is considered cruel and unusual punishment and is illegal in many states. Outside of the USA I am not so sure about. Our brains control everything. The five senses, awareness, learning ability and style and a multitude of everything else. It is a truly remarkable organ. Our brains and body need electricity in order to function, and there are connections in every mm of the human body that has one or more of these connections. These are neurons. Lots and lots of neurons make up something called a nerve. Chemical signals are passed from the end of one neuron to the next neuron to either keep that electricity corsing through our bodies or to stop a thought or an action. It is currently estimated that there are about ONE BILLION neurons in the brain alone. Wellbutrin and Prozac change the amount of chemicals that go through our brains and body. Prozac stimulates neurons to make more of a chemical called neopenephrin, and the Wellbutrin is known as a SSRI (Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor). Once the chemical called Serotonin leaves one neuron to go to the next, the sending neuron closes its' doors so the chemical cannot be sucked back up and used at a later time. Both medications act as a stimulant for people with depression, and as a depressive or, "calmer downer" for people with ADD, ADHD and other conditions. Taking high doses of both {depending on strength and amount taken and how the body reacts to such a medication} will overstimulate the brain to the point of yes, being a "zombie" If your combination of current medications is not helping, go back to the doc or shrink and either have doses adjusted by someone who knows better than I, or combine quite a variety of medications that are on the market today until they find the right combination for YOU. Didn't know you'd be getting a psych lesson today, did you? I hope this has helped in some way...keep trying and DO NOT mix medications without the consent of a doctor or a psychiatirist."

how long does it take to build tolerance to prozac? i've been taking it for many years and am now in a real bad spot mentally and emotionally. i know i need help real bad but it's not as easy as it would seem to be. things just seem to be getting worse by the day. the prozac obviously isn't working anymore. i take it in combination with wellbutrin but haven't seen any positive results from that drug. my meds are prescribed by my doc. i'm taking the max dosage of prozac at this time.

want it bad replied: "Well I would go back to the Psychiatrist and ask them what you should do. You should also ask your therapist about what is going on..."

Sarah replied: "Well, I have never heard of building tolerance towards an anti-depressant drug before. Ok, first off are you taking the welbutrin with the prozac by doctors orders? If not, you need to stop and see a doctor. They just may increase the dosage for a while. It is also possible that things around you are getting worse than when you started prozac, which whould then make you more depressed i suppose. It could also just be you are hitting some blues, and they might just wear off. I would seriously suggest getting an appointment with your doctor. He may up it, or change it or whatever. Try confiding with someone that you trust, that could seriously help take off the edge, that's worked with me before. Be careful with wellbutrin, i take it and sometimes it can be kinda wierd ya know. So, point is see a doc, stop combining unless instructed to, tell someone you know. Hope that works, good luck! =)"

lcmcpa replied: "About 2 years. Ask your doctor about Paxil and/or Welbutrin. l"

mandy replied: "Maybe the best thing to do is to just get off everything you are on. I know it seems hard now, but trust me you can do it. I used to be really depressed also and I was taking antidepressants.. I was on paxil and wellbutrin but I decided to get off of them both because they were doing no good for me and I realized I couldn't rely on medicine anymore, and now i'm off of everything and I feel fine. Talk with your psychiatrist about what they feel is best for you, but honestly some antidepressants can be dangerous and make you feel worse so just be careful!"

Schmurkl replied: "Tell your Doctor about it, maybe he needs to change the combination of drugs to make you feel better. There are other medications out there for you, so make that phone call."
