Does Lexapro Really Have The Cleanest Liver Metabolization Of All Anti-Depressants? I found this online .....
"Lexapro has the cleanest cyp450 system (liver metabolization) of all AD's. Celexa was the cleanest before, only mild inhibitions in the 2d6 and 1a2...Lexapro has 0 (negligible) inhibitions in all the pathways..3a4,2d6,1a2,2c19,and 2c9
(In otherwords...it is nearly impossible to get a drug-to-drug interaction with Lexapro...which is good news for anybody on multiple meds.)"
Does anybody know if that is true?
abdul replied: "your mind is the key to the answer......"
Are you supposed to have a blood test regularly while on Lexapro? Are you supposed to have a blood test to check on your liver and liver enzymes while on Lexapro.I read that Lexapro works on your liver and could cause liver enzymes to go up?
Just Breathe replied: "I've heard that too. So yes...you should probably have your liver enzymes checked every 4-6 weeks."
quyiala replied: "whenever you take a medicine you should have a blood test regularly"
Melissa replied: "I was on Lexapro for over a year and never had bloodtests.
However any medication you take can affect your liver since it has to pass through your liver and its the livers job to filter out poisions so its never a bad idea to have it checked."
Baby Girl replied: "I'm on it and I get blood test done."
my liver was bad when i was on 20 mg zyprexa 20 mg lexapro but i think it has fixed itself now? my kidney was too...this is the maximum amount you are supposed to be on though i only overdosed 1 time
in las vegas i took a few atleast more pills the whole rest of the bottle pretty muchly then i have scars on my wrist from slicing myself finally got over a lot of my clinical depression
heatedwirez replied: "and whats the question"
What can I do to keep my liver healthy? I am taking lexapro and kava kava for anxiety and panic disorder, and I drink socially. There are liver problems in my family and all 3 of these are bad for my liver. Even if I never drink, I am still taking the meds, and I'm afraid of getting liver disease.
Is there any way to counteract this or help keep my liver healthy?
GAZZA replied: "do not drink alcohol, drink clean fresh water, eat your greens and carrots for iron! no drugs! no toxic foods like McD's...
meditation!"
funguy replied: "Drink lots of water, no cigarettes or alcohol"
remedi68 replied: "Milk Thistle supplies the active component Silymarin and supports a healthy liver function.*
Also drink cranberry water (pure no sugar cranberry) mixed with water..4oz of carn to 29oz of water every time you are thirsty, and drink hot lemon water before each meal. Do that for 3 weeks."
How bad is drinking with lexapro? What are the effects? I have heard you aren't supposed to drink on lexapro, but never gotten any definite answer on what negative it does to you...I've heard it coule make you more drunk or cause liver damage, but have no real answer...If anyone with a medical background could answer I'd greatly appreciate it!
**I'm looking for specifics of what BAD can happen...if you get tipsy.semi drunk?
michele replied: "In moderation, it's fine (e.g., a beer or two once a week).
~Dr. B.~"
MaryAnn B replied: "I don't have a medical background but I do take a similar pill that you are also not suppose to drink with. People do drink but the biggest effect is that you get drunk really fast. You can also have seizures so be really careful. I do occasionally have a drink but not alot and not often. Take it easy. They have warnings on labels for a reason."
Mina replied: "When I was on Lexapro my psychiatrist told me that it would be fine to have one glass of wine a day while on it. I didn't notice any effects from the interaction, but I was never a heavy drinker to begin with.
Just go easy on it, but if you're really worried don't drink. It's better to be safe than sorry."
agarcia72286 replied: "lexapro is an anti-depressant, which means it'll lift you up a bit....drinking, however, is a downer. it lowers your blood pressure, your mood, respiration rate, all that. it'll probably just make the lexapro non effective. i would not risk it though. you may get extremely depressed while drunk."
Angel B replied: "Alcohol and Lexapro
Drinking alcohol while on Lexapro is not recommended. This is because if alcohol and Lexapro are taken together, Lexapro may potentially increase the effects of the alcohol. If you choose to drink while taking Lexapro, you should drink only light-to-moderate amounts of alcohol -- one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. Twelve ounces of beer, five ounces of wine, and one ounce of 100-proof spirits all count as one alcoholic drink. You should also make sure not to drink at the same time as you are taking your Lexapro.
Can I Drink Alcohol on Lexapro?
According to the Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) manufacturer, drinking alcohol while on Lexapro is not recommended. Because medicines and alcohol act upon similar chemicals in the brain, the concern is that Lexapro will increase the effects of alcohol -- whether this is increasing depression symptoms or affecting motor skills.
When many healthcare providers are asked whether it is okay to drink alcohol while on Lexapro, they recommend that if a person chooses to drink, he or she should drink only light-to-moderate amounts. He or she should also drink alcohol only after fully understanding the effects that Lexapro (and other medicines he or she is taking) may have on the body.
Alcohol and Lexapro: What Is Moderate Drinking?
When healthcare providers recommend moderate alcohol drinking, they mean one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. Because the alcohol content in drinks varies, what counts as one drink also varies. However, healthcare providers have some general guidelines about what counts as one drink. Each of the drinks listed below is an example of one alcoholic drink:
12 ounces of beer
5 ounces of wine
1 ounces of 80-proof whiskey or 1 ounce of 100-proof spirits.
Alcohol and Lexapro: What Does the Research Say?
Drinking alcohol while on Lexapro does not seem to increase the mental and motor skills impairments caused by alcohol in normal subjects taking Lexapro. However, the effects of alcohol and Lexapro in those with depression or generalized anxiety disorder have not been studied. This is one reason for caution with alcohol and Lexapro.
Using Caution with Alcohol and Lexapro
If you decide to drink alcohol in moderation while on Lexapro, it is recommended that you not drink alcohol at the same time as you take your Lexapro. Also, it is important to learn the effects of Lexapro on your body before you begin drinking. Lexapro may affect some individuals' ability to perform certain functions, such as driving a car or operating machinery.
Talking With Your Healthcare Provider About Alcohol and Lexapro
You should talk with your healthcare provider about alcohol and Lexapro. This is because everyone's situation is different, and your healthcare provider understands yours best. Based on what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, you and your healthcare provider can make a shared decision about your intake of alcohol while on Lexapro."
Angel'smom replied: "You damage your liver and (according to a friend) you may feel less drunk than you really are. It is a popular misconception that you 'just' get drunk quicker if you are on meds, but I know someone who ended up in the hospital (unconscious) because she never got/felt a "buzz" so she kept drinking, thinking she was O.K. She went from feeling fine to passed out... Don't do it!!! She didn't even take her meds that day because she was going to drink that night, but it was still built up in her system. [She ended up alcohol poisoning and they had to pump her stomach.]"
Are their any interaction between milkthistle/N-Acetyl- L-Cystein & buspar/Lexapro? I'm using milk thistle & N-Acetyl-L-Cystein for liver detox and liver health since I was told that I have a high liver enzyme. Does anyone know if these supplement can interact with lexapro and buspirone. Thanks
karen464916 replied: "not sure as your spellings are not quite right! try the website linked below they might have some good info for you, spelling medicines can be a nightmare!"
Lexapro & Alcohol could be fatal? I read that some people who are on lexapro and drink alcohol, the liver has a hard time metabolizing both and it could be fatal. Why isn't this on the Lexapro Website as A warning? It just says Alcohol isn't the best thing to do, but NO interactions with them both. That sucks because im on Lexapro and I like to social drink.
read that.
Are you asking me who im trying to impress? Nobody im asking people A question because Im on the drug and drink sometimes. Im asking my doctor too but I wanted to hear from more people.
FireBug replied: "You said some people, which is because medications affect people in different ways. Some people have liver damage/failure from too many Tylenol. I wouldn't drink and take the meds. But that is a personal choice. Call your doctor and ask him/her about your dosage and what amount of alcohol is safe."
sparkles replied: "no...if the answers sucks please talk to your doctor who prescribe you that drug. Sorry, I only took a few psychology classes. WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO IMPRESS ????"
life is good replied: "The reason not to use them together is that Lexapro is an anti-depressant and Alcohol is labeled as a Depressant. While you can get an initial up feeling while drinking, the down feeling is lower than if you hadn't drank.
The two cancel out each other"
anna123185 replied: "I take Lexapro and had the same concerns as you do. I also have a liver disease, so had to pay special attention to this concern. I asked both my hepatologist and my psychiatrist and received the same answer. Lexapro and other antidepressants can magnify the effect of alcohol ie, make you feel drunk quicker. Therefore, the first few times you drink while taking Lexapro, be careful.
Also, if you are drinking and taking Lexapro, Lexapro may not work for you that evening. That is because depressants and antidepressants CAN cancel eachother out.
Therefore:
Don't go overboard on drinking so that you do not overload your liver, since both alcohol and Lexapro are metabolyzed in the liver.
Don't expect to have Lexapro make you feel "better" if you are drinking.
And don't drink as much as you usually do, because you may find yourself drunk much sooner than you'd expect.
I hope this helps. This is what I have been following, and I am okay. (I get my liver tested every three months)."
Lexapro & Tylenol?? I know that you cannot take more than 4000mg of tylenol Daily.
BUT since Lexapro also goes through the liver would the daily amount of tylenol be LESS than 4000mg for someone on Lexapro?
Or would it be the same since there isn't any interaction?
thefreevariable replied: "Lexapro (escitalopram) is not hard on the liver. Drinking alcohol might make 4000mg per day risky, but I can't imagine Lexapro having any significant effect on Tylenol's rate of metabolism."
lucifer replied: "acetaminophen causes liver damage through free radical injury.. . and lexapro (escitalopram) a SSRI is known to cause GI disturbances like upset stomach diarrhea constipation heartburn and stomach pain , the mechanism is different... and as far as i know, there is no major interaction between the two...... so there is no major change in the metabolism of the two.....
but something that really screws the liver is taking acetaminophen with aspirin..... free radical injury with an uncoupler."
At this point I'm taking Lexapro and xanax at night, Phentermine and synthroid during the day and sometimes Advil for cramps. I feel like such a drugee. I'm addicted to the Xanax and feel that I'm becoming addicted to the phentermine as well. One makes uppety and the other one brings me down. I'm starting to believe that I'm going to die like Anna Nicole or Elvis. I don't know how this ever happened to me. I was so sure that I wasn't a drug addict since I don't like booze or illegal drugs. Now I realize that I'm fit right into that crowd. What do I do when my whole life I've been depressed and now I feel good? I'm not going into rehab and psychiatrists are so judgmental. I just don't know. I'm worried for my health, my heart, my brain, my liver etc.
mcdannells replied: "All these pills are from your doctor right? So you are not a druggy, however you really need to take control of your own health.
All those pills are they really doing you any good? Are your symptoms or some of your symptoms from the side effects from one or more of those drugs?
You will get to a point where popping pills day in and day out get real old and you will then take control of your own health.
Wish you well....."
zuccasmom replied: "You should be worried. Where are you getting the Phentermine? is it for sinus problems or weight? You need to stop that immediately, it's bad for the heart. It's not a good idea to take that with synthroid either.
If you take zanax at night and only at night, you're not addicted but it's great that you're aware of it becoming a problem.
Talk to a pharmacist. Are you going to different docs to get the meds? Are you buying Phentermine online?
Stay away from the Phentermine, you'll get through your soup, whatever it may be."
My1Rx replied: "Sounds like you are burning the candle at both ends. I have been on these medications at least once in my life but never on all of them at the same time. The mind and body can only take so many extreme ups and downs in a 24 hour period before it crashes and burns. You may want to ween yourself off of these mind altering drugs and grab the bull by the horns. My1Rx.com"
catherine h replied: "as you should be worried. get off the medication now! go to. read it, do what it says. it will change your life, it changed mine. no more medication."
happydog replied: "How many of these medications were prescribed for you, and how many are you taking on your own? Continue taking the ones that are prescribed for you and drop the ones that aren't prescribed for you.
If psychiatrists are too judgmental, then go to a licensed professional counselor or a social worker that is trained in therapy. These people are mental health professionals as well, but they tend to help the client work on their positives rather than concentrate on the negatives.
But if you are abusing drugs that weren't prescribed for you, you need to look for help."
poopski replied: "To treat your depression, Lexapro is very helpful and often combats panic disorders.
Synthroid is a thyroid medication.
Phentermine is an upper and was used as an effective diet pill. I don't know if you remember the Fen-Phen scare, but it is in the same category. Apparently it caused heart valve problems. It is highly addictive is banned here in Canada. It is a class 4 drug in the States also, up there with cocaine. Very Itdangerous drug for the heart.
xanax is a calmer. Often people use it to come down from the after effects of many street drugs. However, it's in the Valium family and wiil make you sleep.
I assume your doctor gave you Xanax to be able to sleep after taking the upper Phentermine, which causes insomnia.
Frankly, in my opinion if your problem is depression, the Lexapro should help. If not, try another antidepressant.
I don't know why, but I get the feeling that you are ordering Phentermine on line. I seriously can't see a doctor prescribe that combination. makes no sense to me unless you weigh over 400 pounds. In any case, please don't stop these meds cold turkey, wean yourself off of them, or you may have severe and dangerous side effects. Please think hard about this.
Good luck and You have already taken your first step by admitting the problem. All the best!! (I'm sorry I wrote a book), lol"
mark f replied: "Sorry to hear of your dilema. I was in your dilema. I took pre ion uppers and pre ion downers. Whatever you do don't cold turkey especially the xanax. You can take seizures and potentially die in extreme cases. Rehab centers are money driven and will just put you through a brutal detox and you will suffer extreme withdrawal symptoms in all likelyhood. You will be told if you fail or start asking for drugs you are drug seeking etc. They won't tell you you are drug seeking because their regime is brutal and a failure. The person gets the blame not the withdrawal symptoms ya know. You need to very gradually wean yourself off the drugs. I would strongly recommend visiting this web site and clicking on the link to join their forum. They can help you with your xanax problem and should be able to point you in the right direction with your other pills.
It is usually recommended to use diazepam (a long acting benzodiazepine) to withdraw from xanax (a short acting benzodiazepine). This page explains it better
Good luck. You can get off the pills. I did it and I was in a bad way. Just do it right. If ya wanna get off the pills you can. Just educate yourself before trying to and don't jump in feet first. Phentermine is very toxic on the heart."
