metformin, synthroid and prenatal vitamins....? I feel like I am on too many medication. I have pcos and take 1500mg one time a day. and amd on synthroid for my throid problem and am taking pre-natal vitamin as we are ttc. I would like to know if taking metaformin 3 times (500mg) a day has better results compared to taking 1500mg at once...please help

Melinda P replied: "Keep in mind, prenatal vitamins are not really 'medication', it's a vitamin to help with birth defects if you do get pregnant. So, technically, you are only on 2 pills....and you body has to be in tip top shape in order for conception to occur...so it's not a bad thing. As far as the other medication, your dr. knows best, so whatever he/she prescribes, is the best method for you to take...so I would follow his/her direction. Best of luck!"

PCOS, hyperthryoidism, metformin, synthroid and weight loss.? Hi, I am 19 years old and was diagnosed with PCOS a little more than a year ago. The doctor prescribed me 1 1/2 pills of metformin 2X a day. I am unsure, but I think each pill is 500mg so that would be 1500mg a day. Within the first month of taking metformin, I lost 20lbs. This was a great relief to me as I was 168lbs and it was reduced to 148lbs! Then about a month later, I was also diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I had also transferred to a new doctor and around the same time, my pre ion for metformin [which I had only been taking for about a month] and he said he would prescribe me the metformin after I had been cured from hyperthryoidism. Now, almost a year later, my thyroid levels have been normal with the help of the radioactive iodine treatment. But the thing is, by stopping the metformin, I think the PCOS still caused me to gain weight as now I have not only gained the 20lbs I lost back, but I have gained an additional 17lbs, making me 185lbs! While I had hyperthryoidism, I wasn't allowed to exercise at all, not even walk up the stairs to get to my 3rd floor classes so I don't know if that's what made me gain weight again or if it was just the PCOS. Do you think I will lose the 20lbs per month again and how much weight should I lose total with the help of the metformin? I will also be prescribed synthetic thyroid hormones which is also known to help people with hypothryoidism lose weight [I will be permanently hypothroid forever with the treatment]. Do you think that I will be able to lose all my excess weight to my normal range of around 125lbs? Because being overweight is not looked upon kindly in my culture [Chinese] and it has impacted me a lot especially when I eat very healthy [almost vegetarian] and still work out for an hour a day [now that I am able to again] and walk to all my college classes from my dorm [which takes about 10min to and 10min back]. Thank you!! Oh and to add, I have been seeing an Endocrinologist since I was first diagnosed with PCOS. Then when I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, I had to transfer to another Endocrinologist because I moved.

Randy W replied: "First off let me say that you have quite a little bit to deal with. The PCOS is in now way affecting you weight unless it had become a tumor. The pre ion for metformin is giving for helping regulate blood sugars in Diabetics. Now the issue here is that Synthoid is a medication that could cause weight gain. And if you are type 2 Diabetic and your not taking metformin you would be gaining weight from excess sugars that you body is storing as fat because your body doesn't know how to deal with it. I would suggest going to an Internal Medicine Doctor, or Even an Endocrinologist. These two type of doctors are going to be able to give you the best answer for what is going on. And I wouldn't wait, Make the call as soon as possible because it's hard to get into a Endocrinologist, usually 2-3 months. In the mean time I would suggest a 1500 calorie a day diet, no caffinated drinks, No Breads or Starches. Keep a daily record of you food intake and exercise and take this to the new Doctor."

DNA replied: "So you are now hypothyroid? Both hypothyroidism and PCOS cause weight gain and make it difficult to lose weight. You most likely gained because you are now hypothyroid and also because your glucose and insulin levels are higher without the Metformin. I have both conditions, so I know exactly what you are going through. Both conditions have to be in check or weight gain will happen. First, you need to have the first thing in the morning TSH be around 1.0. Also, you need to keep your insulin and glucose levels down by exercising, diet, and perhaps Metformin. Synthroid will not help you lose weight. It will just make it easier for you to lose with diet and exercise providing your TSH in the morning stays round 1.0 and you are converting T4 into T3. What are my chances of Conceiving on HCG shot, Femara, Metformin, and Synthroid? ? I am an infertility patient on my first month using the HCG shot and Femara. I've been on Synthroid since Oct 07 and Metformin since Jan. 08. I have PCOS. I am in my 2 WW and I will find out my progesterone levels on Monday and if I am pregnant on Friday of next week. What are my odds? Anyone been on this regimen? I'd love to meet folks who have. Also, what would I be feeling right now? Anything? Thanks in Advance for your Answers!!!

Steph replied: "I am kinda in the same situation. I have been on synthroid since sept 07 and metformin since jan 08. Started clomid in June. I had no luck the 1st 2 months. I was increased to Clomid 100mg days 4-8 this month. I go to doc Monday as well to check the size of my follicles. If 18-20mm they will give me the HCG shot. So I will let you know if any luck on my side and please keep me updated as well. I have PCOS as well. How long have you been TTC?"

sweetheart24 replied: "Hi there! I don't have all of them but I did start prometrium yesterday (to bring on my cycle) then I have to take Femara cd 3-7 w/ an HcG Trigger shot on cd14. I too have PCOS. I have really high hopes and feelings that this is going to work! It's the first time I have ever taken fertility meds. U might have some good odds, because Femara seems to work really well with some people. Good Luck to you!! Lots of Baby Dust your way!! :o)"

Betina, Lily's mommy! replied: "I'm on Synthroid for hypothyroidism and Metformin for PCOS all the time. When I was trying to conceive I also took the fertility drug Clomid. I took the Clomid for 6 months with no results and my doc said if it doesn't work after 6 months it's not going to. She suggested doing an Intra-Uterine Insemination, but my insurance doesn't cover fertility treatments and the Clomid with an ultrasound every month to tell when I was ovulating (which I wasn't) broke me so I wasn't able to do the IUI. After all that I gave up and decided it just wasn't meant to be and I was never going to be able to get pregnant. A year later my husband and I split up and me being the intelligent person that I am, promptly got a new boyfriend and had unprotected sex because I'm still under the assumption that I'm just infertile, and now here I am 26 weeks pregnant. I went to my doctor when I first found out I was pregnant and she even said she never expected to see me back in her office with a pregnancy without her help. People used to always tell me it happens when you're not trying and I would get so angry at that statement. I can't just stop trying, that's the opposite of what I need to do to get pregnant! But, it turns out that's exactly what I needed. Granted, I also changed partners and lost 55 pounds. ;o) The first signs I had that I was pregnant were increased appetite and VERY sore breasts and I think that started at about 4 weeks along. I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was about 6-8 weeks along. I actually refused to believe I was pregnant because, well, I didn't think I could have kids, and I had been having cramps for about 2 weeks like I usually do when I'm getting ready to start my period. Because of my PCOS my periods are all over the place so I figured I was a few weeks late, but that wasn't unusual. Turns out the cramps were my uterus stretching to make room for the baby. So, those are some signs you can look for. I wish you all the luck in the world, and if you can afford it I say try an intra-uterine insemination. I know several people with PCOS who had no luck with fertility drugs but had success with the IUI. One of them took two tries, but she ended up with perfectly healthy twin girls. ;o)"

Any success stories out there on Metformin, clomid, and synthroid? TTC #2? Hey there...before I even get started I want to thank everyone for taking their time to shed some hope my situation. I am on Metformin 1000mg twice daily, clomid 100mg daily days 4-8, and synthroid 50mcg 1 daily. I just wanted to know if anyone has had any success with this combination. I conceived naturally with my first daughter.I have been trying for almost a year being on the metformin and about 4 months on the clomid. I go back to my OB on Monday to check follicle size. How to improve the effectiveness of Clomid? I am taking Clomid to help conceive. I have PCOS and hypothyroidism. I take metformin, synthroid, prenatal vits daily. Some cycles I ovulate on clomid, others I don't. My doctor tried adding a steroid last cycle to the clomid and I had horrible side effects and still ovulated very late and very weak with a short luteal phase. I have heard of adding high doses of vit. C with the clomid to improve the effectiveness of the clomid and was wondering if anyone else had heard or tried that. Also, are there any other things I can add to the clomid to help increase its effectiveness? Thanks in advance! I am currently on 2550mg of met daily--the highest recommended dose. I also take 100mcg synthroid, and am up to 250mg of clomid days 3-7.

What are the success rates of infertility treatments? My husband and I have been trying to conceive for well over a year now. We are currently seeing a fertility specialist and have seen many pictures of babies that they helped make. My question is how successful can I excpect to be when I am on so many medications? I am currently taking Clomid, Glumetza (Metformin), Synthroid and we have now resorted to some injections of hCG to promote ovulation. Am I forcing this too hard? Am I more likely to miscarry because of all the treatment?

TTC#1 for 17 months replied: "Hmmm...am sorry...dont have an answer to your question....but wud sure love to know. I too have seen a fertility specialist and they are taking it one step at a time. I have been diagnosed with thryoid but my last report says that it is under control now and my endocronologist infact said that the chances of me getting pregnant now are even greater."

IVF MD replied: "Your doctor should help you figure your odds with each treatment and the associated risks/costs. That is his job. In order to give you an accurate success rate for YOU, it's necessary to know your history and all the details concerning your situation. That would take at least 30 minutes and often over an hour to obtain by discussing it with you and doing an exam and possible blood tests. Age is the most important factor. In a worst case scenario, an IUI might less than a 1% chance of success. In a best case scenario, an IVF cycle might have better than a 80% chance of success. Treatment will not make you miscarry more, but just the fact that you need treatment might make you at higher risk of miscarriage if you get pregnant naturally. Good luck. There is hope!"

Could taking synthroid cause insomnia? I take synthroid for my hypothyroidism and metformin for my prediabetes. Could either of these cause insomnia? Thanks!

JP replied: "Go to your local pharmacist with all of your meds, including non presciption and vitamins. They can help you sort them out. When was the last time you had your thyroid level checked-- might be out of whack."

SugarBabie replied: "Yes, synthroid can definately cause this. It can also cause anxiety and panic attacks. You need to take it early in the morning, about an hour before you eat breakfast. Take it on an empty stomach, with a glass of water, and nothing else. Keep it by your bedside table so you don't forget to take it as soon as you wake up. Then have your shower, etc and have breakfast last, so there is as much time as possible between taking it and eating. Vitamins, minerals, some foods and even other meds can interfere with it. You need to get it into your system before anything else and as early as possible in the day. Do not take any vitamins or supplements with it, as they can make it less effective. Taking it in the morning helps avoid the insomnia from it. If you find that it still causes insomnia after a couple of weeks after taking it in the morning, you should talk to your doctor about reducing your dose. If your thyroid is underactive, you NEED this medication, so work with your doctor or pharmacist to find the right dose for you. Some people just don't tolerate this medication well. I'm one of them. This was the advice my pharmacist gave me. She's on the same medication and had the same problems. Good luck! Side Effects of Synthroid - for the consumer Synthroid All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Metformin, Clomid and TTC? I had blood work done and it determined my throid was off. I am now taking synthroid and metformin and will start clomid once my thyroid levels are back to normal, Anyone have similiar experience?

DRL replied: "Yes, my wife has an underactive thyroid and is on 125 mcg of Synthroid, 100mg (I think) of Metformin. She took Clomid about 5 years ago for a while but has since been taken off that. It's not a big deal. Just be sure to take Synthroid in the morning before you eat, you need to wait 30 minute-1 hour (preferably closer to an hour). And make sure you take Metformin at night with dinner otherwise it will upset your stomach and give you the runs."

Yasmin J replied: "metformin made me loose wait so i stoped taking that im already skinny as it is and i was loosing a lot of waight it was very disturbing... but clomid 50 mg made me pregnant the second round...i dont even know why the doc. would give me the metformin!"

I'm moving to the UK on a Working Holidaymaker visa. Since I can't get on the NHS, how much will my meds cost? I am a Type 2 diabetic and take the following medication: - Novorapid (fast-acting inulin) - NPH (intermediate insulin) - Glucophage (metformin) - Synthroid (for hypothyroidism) - Needles for insulin pens, diabetic testing strips, etc. I would just like to get an idea of how much I'll have to spend on my medication each month so I can sort out my budget. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Rayyan Sameer replied: "If you are coming here on Holidaymaker visa and if you are citizen of commonwealth (Australia, NZ, South Africa) the medical services of NHS are free."

epidavros replied: "Rayyan is not correct. Working holidaymakers are specifically excluded from arriving for NHS care. Your country may have reciprocal agreements with the NHS for care, but you will need to check what these cover (it may only be emergency cover) and what you have to pay for (it is most likely that you will need to pay for medications). You could try checking an online pharmacy to get an idea of prices for the drugs you need, and also their availability so that the pre ions you bring specify local variants. You may qualify for free NHS care once you have been working for a period and have paid enough class 2 national insurance contributions."

suzy x replied: "it depends if your country offers a service like the NHS. i would suggest bupa it is a private sector."
