How quickly can you feel the effects of products like Prevacid and Nexium on stomach pain? Do they provide for any immediate relief, and if not, how many days before they start to have a noticeable effect?

dymond replied: "Depends on how bad the problem is-1 -14 days , for me it took 7 days to get any relief, from prevacid."

12 week old son, bad reflux and doc prescribed prevacid. Concerned about the aspartame in the prevacid. HELP!? My 12 week old son has been taking Zantac (1ml 2x's daily) since about 1 week old. He has still been having really bad reflux, spitting up, gas (really smelly too), you name it, it seems like he's got it. We took him to the Ear, Nose and Throat Dr. today (he also has Laryngamalasia) and they switched him to Prevacid. I was just reading about the side effects and they say that the prevacid contains aspartame. I am concerned about this because it also says that product can pass thru breastmilk & to consult physician before using if you are nursing. So, if it says to not nurse and take this medication, how can it be ok to give it to your infant??? Our son is gaining weight well, but we are becoming more and more stressed because it seems like nothing helps. We do the elevating the head and all that too. I am pumping and feeding my breastmilk to him in a bottle. I am trying to start supplementing formula and tried the Enfamil AR today (per dr.'s orders). He didn't do very good with it but, I think it was because I didn't know to use a different nipple. Has anyone had the same problems. Any kind of tips or tricks or advice at all would be much appreciated! Thank you all SO much!

is preggo again. replied: "DON"T GIVE IT TO HIM! What is your Dr thinking?! time to get a new one! My daughter had horrible acid reflux and all we did was put 2 scoops of rice cereal in her bottles to thicken it up to help her keep it down. It worked (most of the time) and she was able to sleep better as she wasn't spitting up everytime she went to sleep. Also we had her sleeping at in incline. (she slept in her carseat for the first 4 months of her life) and she was fine after that. She's now 6 months and no more reflux. Infant reflux usually goes away around 4 or 5 months and it takes roughly a month for prevacid to kick in anyway. Just try what I suggested instead of giving your child a drug that you have no idea what will do to him!"

Carlee replied: "i know of doctors at the office i work at prescribing this for newborns with similar conditions and it worked well. every medication had side effects. i'd call your doctor and discuss your concerns with them."

Dyot! replied: "Supplementing with formula has a lot of proven risks; ingestion of minute amounts of aspartame has no known risks... Useful:"

Howdy Y'all replied: "I don't think it mentions the drug passing into breast milk because of the aspartame. It is saying that assuming that it is the mother who is taking the drug, and warning you that it will pass through the milk. It doesn't matter if it is the baby who is taking it. They are just telling you that if the baby is not the one intended to take the drug, the mother should not take it while nursing."

renee replied: "how bad is your son's reflux?? when docs prescribe meds to anyone - especially children- they should weigh the benefits against the possible side effects. pretty much every medication has some potential side effect(s) and they have to decide if the side effect is better or worse than the problem. i had to have my son seen by the doc at 6 weeks old due to severe spitting up (i'm talking pretty much the entire bottle - he'd eat and spit up then be ready for another bottle since very little of the first stayed down) and horrible fussiness. he would scream and scream like he was in pain. he was put on the zantac, his formula was switched to neutrimagen (sp?) , and we were told to put rice cereal in his bottles. he still spit up pretty badly, but it didn't seem to bother him. he was gaining weight fine and was happy so we were no longer concerned. he is close to 7 months old now and he is no longer on the zantac or the neutrimagen and he spits up very little. have you tried dr. brown bottles?? they worked wonders for my baby, but i do know of some people who have hated these bottles. also, as far as not being able to nurse if the mother was taking the medication i would guess that that would be because of the child not needing it. of course they wouldn't want the medication being passed to a child who doesn't need it - every med i've ever been on has that warning."

Mommy to Karsyn Michelle replied: "My Baby has reflux as well. She is on the Enfamil A.R Lipil as well and she is on Prevacid also, she takes half of a dissolvable tablet a day and it helps tremendesly!"

Advanced Digestion Solution - a scam or good product? I'm looking for an alternative to medicine such as Prilosec, Prevacid, and Nexium. I found Advanced Digestion Solution (long sales page: ) Looking in Google, I can't find any reviews, and it looks like they're kind of spammy with marketing. I'm almost desperate to find something else, and if the claims they're making are true (who knows?) then it would be a great product. Does anybody have experience with them?

webwanderer replied: "This sounds like a "between a rock and a hard place" kind of inquiry. Medical science has done wonders in the field of gastrointestinal health BUT there are still some gaps. And, these gaps can be quite large especially if you're the one "inside the gap!" Drugs out in the marketplace are, by and large, very thoroughly tested before they are put out there for the doctors to prescribe for their patients. "Natural or herbal" products are not, at least to my knowledge, tested as are pharmaceutical drugs. So, I think you may be buying a "pig in a poke" or it may really help you. It ends up as a very tough decision. Perhaps you should consult with a good medical doctor who also is knowledgable in "alternative" medicine. They are out there but they might be a little hard to find. Try the "Yellow Pages" and you might see a listing (or two) of a doctor who uses "alternative" medicine. Good luck with your "research!""

Legion... replied: "All these claims seem to be the standard ones made for multi-strain probiotic tablets, so I am pretty sure that is what they are actually selling. If you wanted to try it, you would probably be better getting a brand of probiotic that has been proven effective, rather than an unknown one like this. There is a list of tested ones at the bottom of this document. When I took a probiotic called Multibionta, it did pretty much what this website is claiming. However I never had any of these problems so bad that I needed any pre ion medicines."

GERD/anxiety/gagging reflux? with much experience/research, does anyone know which of the following works best for GERD? i have a bad case of it, mostly linked to some foods and anxiety situations... * Aciphex * Nexium * Prevacid * Prilosec * Protonix * Zegerid zantac, prevacid, and mucinex are three products that have not had much affect. please help me out, and thank you...

sweet sue replied: "Prilosec used to be pre ion and was almost $3 a pill. It is now over the counter for about $30 for a month supply. I know the box says not to take for more than 2 weeks but I took it by pre ion for years. It used to be advertised as "the purple pill". When it was getting ready to be OTC the manufacturer came out with the improved purple pill, Nexium. but no one tells you that. Protonix seems to be the most prescribed one I see these days but Pepcid and Prilosec both are OTC ow and work well. Talk to your Dr. about it. Just an fyi, mucinex is for coughs to liquify sputum in the lungs, it has nothing to do with GERD."

Heather replied: "I have a bad case as well. I've tried all of the things you listed except for Mucinex, Protonix, and Prilosec and the best combination for me so far has been Aciphex along with Zantac combined. It really seems to depend on the person though. I also try my best to stay away from spicy foods and anything high in acid. Good luck"

doris_38133 replied: "Before Prilosec was available over the counter, my doctor prescribed for me Nexium, which is expensive. Then he told me about Prilosec and I could buy it over the counter and really take it every day. Because they told you not to take it over so many weeks, you should see your doctor for more serious problems, but some people don't have serious problems, just that things like Tums or Rolaids don't help their situations. He said it was safe to take every day forever!!!!! You just have to make sure you don't have throat cancer and stomach cancer which can cause this symptoms. Other than that it is like taking a Pepcide every day, nothing more. Mucinex is a chest and sinus mucus drug, not for you stomach. It is for congestion only. Read the box, it will tell you what it does"

fisherwoman replied: "Is it possible that you have a Hiatal Hernia, combined with acid reflux symptoms. This type of hernia is the only internal hernia, it is usually near the top of the stomach. It will allows acids and other digestive juices, to back into the esophagaus, in the same manner of Gerds. Staying in a vertical position, after eating is helpful, using gravity to keep things down. Don't eat anything, one hour before bed, and no drinks, say 1/2hr. I would address your anxiety issue, as well. If you are aware of situations that raise your level of anxiety, try to avoid those, if possible. I know, easier said, then done. I guess I mean, try to modify your behaviours, to avoid having anxiety behaviours. Don't put yourself in a place that is uncomfortable, until you feel you can face it, head on. I would think an antidepressent would be helpful, see the doc soon if possible. It's better to get it under control, so that your life is not dictated by this. And, the double wammy is, your GERD symptoms are likely irritated by, or may be caused by the anxiety. And the cycle keeps going, do you see what I mean? Anyway, I hope you feel better, and get your questioned answered. Good luck."

Help me figure this condition out? My fiance has developed a rather odd condition. He has already seen a docotor (who I think is a complete quack) who gave him 4 different medications to take daily (an allergy med, steroids, prevacid, and an anti-inflammatory). The doc didn't do any blood work and I think that this might be lymphaticly related, so white counts would be up. The doc had no idea really what it was. Nothing in his diet has changed, he hasn't eaten anything that he hasn't had before, no change in clothing, no change in laundry soap, no change in shower products, no change in cologne/deodorant, no new anything in the house. It seems to suddenly come up with no real rhyme or reason to it. Symptoms: -red splotches -Isolated areas of swelling, sometimes it is a small area on the underside of the foot, or his wrists, or his ankles, or his lip has swollen before too -it is NOT itchy -it is NOT painful I can't think of what this could be, I just don't think it is an allergy. Has anybody experienced this? We kept a food diary for a week and the splotches and swelling persisted on a pretty random basis. We can't seem to isolate any one thing that could cause this. We switched to all hypo-allergenic soap in the laundry just incase that was it but it seemed to do nothing. The splotches and swelling started coming back while he was on the meds.

CDRN replied: "It does sound like it maybe an allergic reaction. I would keep a diary of everything he does and eats for a while and record when the splotches come on. How long do they last? I would also go to a different doctor. He does sound like a quack if he didn't do any tests on him at all. Is he still getting the splotches while he is on the meds? You can become allergic to something that you were never allergic to before."

Do I have gingivitis? My gums are not red and they don't bleed when I brush gently. However, there are arcs of white around a few of my teeth and when touched, they hurt a lot. It hurts if I eat or drink anything irritating. I also have several little canker sores around my gums and one on my tongue. I am taking amoxicillin and prevacid. I am applying Zilactin-B 4 times a day on the canker sores. QUESTIONS: -Do I have gingivitis? -How long will it take before this all goes away? -What's a good product to heal this gingivitis/canker sores/infection? -What could be causing this? (amoxicillin is maybe weakening immune system?) This has been going on for TWO DAYS. Please help me heal!

Ritz replied: "no, it does not look like gingivitis. the canker sores are self limiting and it takes 7 to 10 days to heal. it can be because of amoxcilline you are takng. for more information on canker sores you can visit the following link"

How shd I introduce formula to baby? My 4 month old baby has been breastfed for the most part. We tried introducing foods but his tummy isnt taking it too well yet. So we stopped immediately. My milk supply seems to be reducing as compared to before ... and so I am thinking of supplementing with formula. My baby may have milk allergy. He used to fuss a lot when he was a newborn. Per the pediatrician I have put him on Prevacid for his acid reflux and cut out milk ( not diary products .. I still take yoghurt and butter ) in case he has milk allergy. We tried Soy formula ( Similac ). He hated it ! We then tried Enfamil Gentlease... he hates that too ! Am worried about what I shd feed him if my milk dries out before he is 6 months. Also after 6 months, he still needs milk in his diet. Please advice as to how I can get my son to start drinking formula. I plan to continue to breastfed ( I pump twice a day and feed him the pumped milk ).. but sometimes I'm not able to pump much especially after he has fed. The reason I think I am not producing enough at times is when my baby cries even after feeding and seems to want more. He comes to my breast, tries to suck and then pulls away and cries. This is after he has fed for over 10-15 mins. He has about 4 wet diapers per day.

iamhis0 replied: "Are you able to nurse without pumping? Depending on the pump too much unnecessarily can compromise your supply. Is there are reason that your think your supply is diminishing? Remember that a pump is not as efficient as baby at taking out the milk. If you are able(not working) start feeding directly from the breast on demand. Introducing formula will only decrease your supply more ad you are telling your body that less milk is necessary when you supplement those feeds. If you really think you supply is diminishing, contact a lactation consultant and find ways to increase your supply, not supplement with formula. "

hamsterbabies replied: "Normally, your milk production should increase as your baby needs it and then tops off around 4-6 months with the introduction of solids. You stated foods, but not which foods and how those were introduced. Rice cereal should be first. There are many different consistencies to try. My baby liked the cereal actually less soupy than they suggest on the box. He still needs milk in his diet for years - let alone the next few months. You need to pump after he feeds 4-5 times per day to increase your milk supply. "Fussing a lot" isn't very specific though.... a lot of new moms think their baby is fussing a lot and it really isn't anything at all. per Parent's magazine, babies are diagnosed with acid reflux when 80% don't even have it. has some great information."

Melanie replied: "I stopped at 4 months because my daughter got a stomach virus and was in the hospital. I was so worn out and sick myself that I decided to switch. I also wasn't getting much when I pumped. I offered her a formula bottle and she took it right away. I gave her Similac Advanced. I would ask your baby's doctor what to do if he won't take the formula."

trouble_sum81 replied: "Mix half breast milk with half formula. Your baby will get fuller and sleep longer. :)"

Kerie K replied: "Look for goat milk ... my little brother could not take anything but goat milk when my Mom's milk dried up at 7mos. I think she bought it at a local food co-op, but I am not sure what you would do now days to find it."

gracie replied: "iamhis gave you the very best advice. Wow at the ones telling you to give formula! You truly can't tell how much you are producing by the pump! Your baby is your best breast pump! If your baby is not losing weight, if baby still has 6 or so wet diapers a day, then BABY IS GETTING ENOUGH! So many quit unnecessarily because they *think* that they are not producing enough when they actually are. Sometimes I can pump a TON.... Sometimes hardly any at all! Yet my baby continues to thrive and gain weight! Please contact your Local La Leche League and get some SUPPORT! Breastfeeding is so hard to do without some support! Please don't give your baby formula or goats milk! Contact your LLL or e mail me if you like. Just don't give up for the sake of your baby! Very best wishes to you and your little one!"

does anyone else have vomiting with hiatal hernia or acid reflux? my husband has been completely checked out with endoscopy and colonoscopy and all they can find is a hiatal hernia. he says he experiences nausea a lot and sometimes usually in the mornings he will vomit. when he starts vomiting it is so bad he can't even go to work. the Dr's say they think he has acid reflux that isn't controlled. he was taking prevacid and it had been a while since he had thrown up but he was still experiencing the nausea. the dr wanted to change him to nexium 2x a day and he done that for a few days and woke up this morning throwing up. and after i asked him about it, i found out he had been taking the prevacid also (by that i mean a prevacid in the morning and a nexium at night). we have tried to figure out what foods are making it worse but we can't detect a pattern. also he has been drinking an off brand crystal light type product that has citric acid listed as the first ingredient? would that make the acid reflux worse? he drinks A LOT of it.

Swedegirl replied: "Definitely! Before I had my hiatal hernia repaired, I vomited constantly throughout the day. Have his doctors talked to him at all about repairing the hiatal hernia through surgery? He is doing a lot of damage to his esophagus from getting sick to his stomach so frequently. Putting him on heartburn medication isn't going to fix the hernia or magically make it go away. Have you guys looked at a medical diagram on the internet of what a hiatal hernia looks like? Part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm - my guess is with him as sick as he is, it's probably worse than what those diagrams will show you. When I had my surgery to repair my hiatal hernia, -half- of my stomach had pushed up through my diaphragm. It's no wonder why I was getting sick to my stomach so frequently at that point. Changing your diet from my own experience really doesn't change anything at all. Your stomach is still stuck pushed through your diaphragm, no matter what you eat or don't eat, it doesn't somehow magically make the hernia go away. The surgery to repair this is relatively simple, and done laparoscopically and has very minimal pain. 5 very tiny incisions the instruments are passed through. I had a Gortex implant sewn into the hole in my diaphragm so my stomach wouldn't pass through again. I haven't had any problems throwing up since having that surgery 5 years ago - additionally I no longer needed heartburn medication either. Another procedure they can do at the same time (which they did with me, and I needed anyhow) is a nissen fundoplication. Part of the stomach is wrapped around the end of the esophagus and stitched in place. This is actually the surgical fix for acid reflux. No problems since with that either. If you doctors at this point haven't brought up or discussed surgery, personally I would be questioning if your husband should see other gastroenterologists."

Question About Milk Allergy? Hi , I have a suspected milk allergy, I found out about this about 7-8 months ago and ever since have been avoiding all dairy products. Ever since I have been feeling fatigued all the time. Sometimes I would try bits of dairy and I would feel slightly symptomatic, I would feel anxious, a bit hard to breathe, mabye a small hive on my arm about a half of a mm. I took a blood test for allergies not too long ago around the beginning of this year and it covered many things, my doctor suspected hypothyroid and confirmed it. The allergy test though said that I was not allergic to milk and that I was actually allergic to wheats, soy, corn, egg and prior to the blood test I was eating all of these foods symptom free. A few weeks later I tried eating some pizza and I felt normal. A few minutes later I started feeling nauseous and had a panic attack. I took a benadryl just to be safe. At the time I was taking prevacid, now I am not. Do you think i'm being malnourished by not eating dairy products? I do take daily vitamins (omega-3, b complex, calcium/magnesium) and I try to get out daily but the fatigue is a bit too much. I have been craving dairy products lately very heavily and as if that is the thing that is missing in my diet. Should I go back to eating it even with a suspected allergy? Thanks

charontheloose replied: "You crave it because it is your norm. For years you ate it. We allways want what we can not have. I am allergic to many things. Latex , adhesives, dust, some trees, shell fish and so on. Think about it Latex and adhesives are everywhere. i can not go into one room of my house without some form there. Even though I have removed it from my coffee pot and my fridge door. the rubber tube is now pvc and so is the seal on my fridge door. I removed all my carpet in the house. With that said. Milk wheat soy and coarn. that is in my every day diet and millions of others. there are many also who never touch a dairy product. Is it Vegans? something like that. Anyway they are very healthy. So i would of got a list from my doctors. but since you did not. Go search for a non dairy diet online. Oh I pity all the work you have to do. For me i just typed in the hidden world of latex like my doc said to d. i got 300 things listed. For your sake i hope you find one or two sites with enough info you do not have to keep searching."

Proud Momma replied: "My son is alergic to egg and milk. He's only two years old and has never had it in his life. He is not even close to being malnourished because I find all the things he needs from other sources. Peanut Butter is a great source of fat and protein. Many juices have added calcium and vitamins. There's even a version of Sunny D that has calcium and vitmain D. Don't forgot all the alternate milks besides soy. There's RIce Milk and Almond Milk which aren't too bad. I also give him vitamin and calcium supplements. And let me tell ya, he's actually bigger and stronger than most of his peers. He's very active, loves to run, jump, climb... you name it. And he takes a lot of pride in being big and strong. If you don't know how to make up the nutrients typically found in dairy, talk to a nutritionist. They can teach you where to find all the nutrients you need. The craving is pyschological. You know you can't have it, so that makes you want it. While milk is a nutritous beverage, it's not the one and only option."

bflogal77 replied: "Allergies and their sources is like utting a jig saw puzzle together. If you are allergic to wheat and their products, you may have a gluten allergy. A simple blood test is not enough to diagnose this. Are you being seen by an allergist? A family doctor cannot do all the tests that are needed to diagnose this complicated condition you are experiencing. And there is always a second opinion you should pursue. Having had allergies similar to yours, I know what you are going through. Good luck to you"

What do they do when heartburn medicines dont help? i took prilosec, still got a little heartburn, and bad side effects so i had to stop, now i take zantac 150 twice a day and i still get bad heartburn, at night only, like baddd i havent seen a stomach dr yet tho..just my regular doctor. my insurance company wont approve prevacid yet... i was told get a presccription for nexium, but im afraid ill have the same side effects as prilosec since they are both PPI's what would a doctor have to do about this chronic heartburn/GERD if nooo medicines work? also, the heartburn might be slighlty psycho somatic... and im 22 year old female, no soda, no alcohol, no smoking or drugs, no fast food, i eat verrry healthy.. i also dont eat anything from the list of foods that they say causes heartburn esp onions, tomato products, peppers, and citris stuff... WHAT CAN I DO?? I am soooo sooo uncomfortable and i cant live like this, and i am sooo angry that i just cant have a normal relaxing night

LYNN W replied: "They will probably run tests to prove that you have acid reflux first and if so and its severe there is surgery to correct the problem when medication doesn't work."

Van Bo replied: "Well, there's still coffee that relaxes the esophogeal sphincter, big time. Otherwise Gaviscon is often recommended, in a bottle. Sleep elevated. The surgery involves tying up the valve a bit; minor."

Chris replied: "Yeah this can happen to many people. Especially if they are chronic heartburn sufferers. And if so there are tons of foods that must be eaten only in moderation. Excessive heartburn can lead to hazardous heart and stomach problems! I've been a heartburn sufferer for 15 years, so I know the in's and outs of it. Check out my blog below for some great free information on permanently curing your heartburn!"

Brandon replied: "I've had some of the same problems, and wrote about what you can do to help here:"
