I am on Fluoxetine (Prozac) tablets, one a day. How do I come off these and are there any side effects.? I have been on them for 2 years and my life is much better now, so I feel the time is ready to come off them.
rosieC replied: "Fluoxetine is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Fluoxetine affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression, panic, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive symptoms
Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your pre ion label
Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from the medication.
It may take 4 weeks or longer before you start feeling better. Do not stop using fluoxetine without first talking to your doctor. You may have unpleasant side effects if you stop taking this medication suddenly.
The doctor may recommend weaning your body off the medication gradually.
People who stop an antidepressant too quickly may trigger a host of symptoms that doctors call antidepressant discontinuation syndrome.
This withdrawal symptoms may include:
Anxiety.
Feelings of depression or sadness.
Moodiness and irritability.
Tiredness.
Headaches and dizziness.
Nausea and vomiting.
Diarrhea.
If an antidepressant is causing an unpleasant side effect, your doctor may opt to lower your dose or prescribe a different type of antidepressant altogether."
Vahid replied: "Deciding when and how to stop taking your antidepressant medication is an important step. You should always discuss this with your doctor and together decide whether it is the right time to stop. It is also important to keep in touch with your doctor during the time while you are coming off your medication to deal with problems that arise.
Usually these drugs should be slowly reduced in dose, since all antidepressants have the potential to cause withdrawal reactions. This is not a new finding, and has been recognised since these drugs were first introduced.
If you have been on an antidepressant continually for six weeks or more, you should not stop treatment abruptly unless there are special circumstances. The exception to this is fluoxetine at 20mg a day, because it remains in the bloodstream for such a long time anyway it performs its own gradual reduction in blood levels. If you prefer, the best thing to do with fluoxetine is to gradually space out the doses from once daily to once every two days and so on.
Withdrawal symptoms begin after one to three days and usually last one to two weeks, although some reports indicate that they can go on for longer. The most common problems are dizziness, nausea, tiredness and headache."
When will prozac side effects go away? Ive been on prozac for a week now for my anxiety disorder and im finding that i am MORE anxious! Im getting side effects such as feeling dizzy, dry mouth and i feel sick. I usually hate taking tablets and as soon as i get any side effect i stop them so im really trying to take the prozac but will these side effects go anyway soon? Im on 10mg and i start 20mg tomorrow.. The only reason im more anxious is because of the side effects.
iluvbirds25 replied: "I have found with most meds the side effects gradually go away up to 3 or 4 weeks. It may be 4 weeks before they are totally gone. Sometimes the side effects do not go away. It is best to always give the medicine a chance before stopping it too quickly."
I recently changed from prozac capsules to generic tablets. I now have persistent nausea. That a side effect? I had no problem with the capsules. And I've been on Prozac for years with no problems until the chemist gave me to these "prozac tabs"
T H replied: "12-29% people will have nausea as a side effect.
If you are worried or it gets pretty bad, do have a talk with your chemist to make sure that particular generic is okay for you. And if you are taking any other medications to mention them to you chemist, just so there wont' be any drug-drug interaction."
Chanhassen replied: "note that the nausea may be related to something else- even mental anxiety over the switch. Are you worried that the medicine won't work as well? If so, you could be giving yourself that nausea.
It could also be that something in the tablets tends to upset your stomach- something different than the contents of the capsule. This i feel is less likely, because the tablets are so small they wouldn't contain enough of any one ingredient to cause a day-long persistent reaction.
My first guess is either- you're sick becasue you've got some kind of stomach bug or you're sick because you're worried about something.
If neither of those is the case, and you honestly think its the tablets themselves, call the pharmacist back and im sure they'll switch it out for you."
gangadharan_nair replied: "Fluoxetine (Prozac) is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (bothersome thoughts that won't go away and the need to perform certain actions over and over), some eating disorders, and panic attacks (sudden, unexpected attacks of extreme fear and worry about these attacks). Fluoxetine (Sarafem) is used to relieve the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, including mood swings, irritability, bloating, and breast tenderness. Fluoxetine is in a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance.
Fluoxetine may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
* nervousness
* nausea
* dry mouth
* sore throat
* drowsiness
* weakness
* uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body
* loss of appetite
* weight loss
* changes in sex drive or ability
* excessive sweating
Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of the following symptoms or those listed in the IMPORTANT WARNING section, call your doctor immediately:
* rash
* hives
* fever
* joint pain
* swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
* difficulty breathing or swallowing
* seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist (hallucinating)
* seizures
Fluoxetine may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.
Please see the web pages for more details on Fluoxetine (generic name) Prozac (brand name)."
AbeLincolnParty replied: "In theory prozac can cause nausea, but their should be no difference between the generic and brand name. The only reservation I have in making this statement is that for some people, it takes up to 30 days for any given constant daily dosage for the blood levels to reach their steady state level.
Other than this, you need to check what you really got."
Changing AD tablets, is it worth the side effects? I have been on 20mg Escitalopram (Cipralex) for 4 months, but then the side effects were getting to me, so I went back to the docs and she swapped it for 20mg of Fluoxetine (Prozac). I'm getting wierd electric like 'shocks' in my head that travel down my spine, like if someone startles you and you jump. When I turn around the room takes a few seconds to catch up with me. I've also had a heavy feeling in my head since Tuesday when I started taking them, and I got a migraine yesterday. There's one or two other things, but they're the worst.
I know everyone is different, but has anyone else experience similar, and did sticking with the new meds mean your side effects stopped, or did you have to change again? I was thinking of giving it a week or two, but is that long enough?
Thanks
Johnny Decca replied: "These side effects sound very unpleasant, I would go back to your doctor or speak to your CPN if you have one."
V replied: "I had the same experience in December. My Cipralex seemed to stop working so I went back to the GP. I was changed on to the Prozac which had exactly the same side effects on me as you are experiencing. I couldn't drive - could hardly walk. I persisted for three weeks, don't know how I managed it. Back to the docs again and changed back to citalopram, (which I had been on before) similar to escitalopram (I've tried that too) and now I feel ace. Better than I have for the last few years. The doc also put me on some kind of betablockers daily and the combination seems to be working for me.
I would advise you to go back to the docs. Like you said, everyone's different, but I know what I felt like and I wouldn't want to put up with it.
good luck!"
NeitherHereNorThere replied: "I did it the other way round changing from prozac to citalopram cos the prozac made me very jumpy. Give them at least 6 weeks and then review them with your doctor but if the side effects are too much to bare then see someone sooner."
Gard23 replied: "Escitalopram is more potent than Prozac, the usual official figure is that 10mg escitalopram is equivalent to 20mg citalopram, with 20mg citalopram being quoted as equivalent to 20mg Prozac.
So by swapping 20mg escitalopram to 20mg fluoxetine, there has been an effective 50% cut in dose. A significant drop.
That indicates a withdrawal situation, as well as the switchover situation. For the withdrawal effects you may have noticed a slight lag between the dropping of the dose, and the onset of these symptoms (Day 3-5 is when the usual onset of escitalopram withdrawal occurs, but some show it sooner, some later).
Brain and body zaps are standardly encountered withdrawal symptoms. So are headaches, dizziness, and the Star Trek 'warp zoom' effect; nausea, the 'flu', increases in agitation and impulsivity, anxiety and depression are other commonly encountered symptoms.
I've linked you to three documents. The first two give the comparative doses, the third is a list of withdrawal symptoms.
You may also have a component of switchover effects going on... agitation effects and the like... however the zaps are associated with withdrawal, which might indicate this to be foremost at the moment.
Perhaps a discussion with your doctor might be most helpful?"
Anyone had Fluoxetine tablets for depression ? Im either suffering form depression or post natal depression. My doctor has given me fluoxetine tablets which are prozac. Bit scared to take them cos i am on my own and have baby to look after...and side effects seem awful. Anyone taken these tablets and experienced side effects? Also are they addictive and do u become dependant on them? or is it easy enuff to come off them?Any advice would be helpful thx.
thx for all answers. very reassuring.i'm hoping to start taking them soon.im on various other medication and antibiotics rite now so was trying to wait till theyr finished.
Maddie replied: "I was prescribed Fluoxetine for post natal depression and they really helped however I did notice that I would get very hot and sweaty at night and would wake up soaking wet which also caused weight loss. I suppose different people have different reactions or side effects - mine were tolerable and I had no real problems coming off the tablets. Hope you are feeling better soon."
Chloe P replied: "I actually really like Fluoxetine compared to other medications I have taken.
I really don't have many side effects. I would say the worst of them would be RLS (restless leg syndrome). It can make it difficult to sleep, cause my legs just won't stop moving. I just run them through hot water, and I'm able to sleep.
I also lost weight on this medication as well, about 15 lbs. It has definitely helped my depression/anxiety problems.
I have not found them to be addictive, at all. In fact- sometimes I forget to take them.
Just be sure to do enough research:
check out
also, find depression forum's with other peoples opinions.
good luck!"
Ciara C replied: "I was given them for panic attacks after I had my child, never really trusted tablets but after just three weeks was feeling almost back to my own self.. Dont worry about getting addicted, your doctor will keep a close eye on you and review your case every few months.
Good luck, hope you start feeling better soon."
Cindy T replied: "The doctor would not have prescribed them if you did not need them. I have been on them and they did help a lot. I have suffered from Post natal depression and it is awful. Take the tablets because they certainly did help me. I did not have any side effects. You will be able to cope better with your baby if you are feeling 100%.
Good luck"
Bear replied: "I'm on them.When you first take them,they take 1-2 weeks to take effect,fully. I took them for approx. 6 months,and didn't think they were doing much,as soon as I stopped taking them,the effect was immediate,and I started taking them again.If you are going to have problems with them,it will happen fairly quickly.Give them a go,you have nothing to lose."
dumplingmuffin replied: "the side effects are minimal and mostly go unnoticed you would be silly not to take them,they will not send you to sleep or make you drowsy"
spoofred replied: "ive had them, u only feel a bit tired at first but thats it the side affects u r reading r only in very extreme cases so u should be fine"
jackie m replied: "The only side effects I had was feeling a bit sick for first few days but after 1 month I came off them as they didn't help - previously I found propananol was better."
girl, interrupted replied: "I've been taking Prozac for around 5 months now. When my dr first prescribed me them she said that if I experience side effects they will be most intense in the first 2 weeks, and she was right. I had headaches, problems sleeping,vivid dreams when I did sleep etc. You may not experience side effects at all but if you do they shouldnt be anything so bad it'll affect your ability to look after your child. If they do persist or are intense you can always go back to your dr and ask to try another anti-depressant which may suit your body better. They are not addictive. Good luck :)"
LilSpud :D replied: "I havent took them personally but my sister has for same thing pnd she seemed fine with them, i know ones that do work they are good my dad takes them because he lost his dad early this year(my grandad) and my sister takes them for pnd to ther called CITROPLAM i think thats how you spell it look it up of google the only thing is if you stop taking them or run out you may feel down again so wean yoursel off them good luck hope you get better soon"

michinoku2001 replied: "Prozac is not addictive. You will have side effects at first, but they will lessen in severity over time. Just be patient, Prozac doesn't start working right away."
berkshire1043 replied: "Been in your shoes. Good luck w/ the prozac. If if doesn't help within a week, go back to the doc. I took Celexa instead. Best wishes for you- anxiety or depression suck."
Susan S replied: "Give the Prozac a chance. It may take a few weeks for the full therapeutic effect to kick in. Hang in there. Speak with your doctor, he/she may be able to expedite things with your counselor."
Debi replied: "Should be fine - it takes a couple of weeks for them to really start working.
Get someone to keep an eye on your bills etc if you can, when I was on them I couldn't give a darn if I was getting red-letters, nothing phased me ! Family had to sort everything !
It's not addictive and it does work.
Edit - we do have Prozac in England"
Karebear replied: "It sounds as though you will really benefit from taking it.Be patient it will take a little while to work but will be so worth it for you."
striperdood replied: "DO YOU KNOW THAT IN ENGLAND THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PROZAC OR RIDILIN.THERE IS ALSO NO NEED FOR IT................CHECK YOUR DIET,IF YOU EAT RIGHT YOU WILL FEEL RIGHT ...SOUND TOO SIMPLE,I LIVE BY IT AND NEVER TAKE ANYTHING BUT A TYLENOL NOW AND THEN......TOO MANY CHEMICALS IN YOUR FOOD.I AM 40+ YEARS OLD AND MOST TEENS CAN'T KEEP UP.TRY IT...NO SIDE EFFECTS."
wyatt'smama replied: "Don't worry, I went through the same thing and was worried as well. But Prozac is the best I have ever tried. You will love it. Little to no noticeably side effects and it truly saved my life years ago when I had an eating disorder. I stopped cold turkey (not adviseable though) when pregnant with my son and I had no issues. It is highly unlikely you will become addicted to it. After my son was born 8 months ago I suffered from PPD. I went on it again and it has helped tremendously. Good for you for taking charge of your situation."
paula replied: "I get heart palpitations which make me anxious, so i take beta blockers, my heart thumps and flutters most of the time, i know it is horrible, but you feel that you have to try something.I have never taken prozac so i dont know what they are like, but keep going and see how you feel, any probs go back to your,e doctor, i hope you you feel better soon, i know how you feel i have been there, but believe me it takes time but things can get better,take care."
Hopefully Helpful replied: "Good for you!
You are taking care of yourself.
Part of your anxiety probably makes you worry about medication. Please try not to worry. A doctor prescribed it for you because he/she thinks you need it and it will help you feel better. I am sorry you have to wait so long to see a therapist. You may feel a sense of relief now that you are getting help. Best Wishes"
Sean replied: "I've been on and off it for 2 years - its not addictive and you can quit at any time (although not suddenly) - it may take up to 2 weeks for you to feel any benefit, your dose may need to be varied or it may not work at all and you'll have to try another medication until you find the magic combination which will alleviate most of your problems. There are some side effects but they tend to dissapear over the course of 2 weeks to a month, those are mainly drowsiness. It will most likely affect your sex drive so be prepared for that. Good luck."
drkangelrzng replied: "prozac is addictive no mater what they say I was on it for 3 yrs, started to develope issues related to it.trying to get off it was the hardest thing I ever did,I was not a pleasant person to be around.I was on it for anxiety too.I am med free now."
angel.lady replied: "Michelle you are doing the right thing. Prozac is very good and will help you through this anxiety.
Councilling will also help, but you should try Yoga, its a great way to control your breathing and heart rate. I know because I have been through anxiety and come out the other side.
If you cannot face going to a class then buy a D.V.D just as good to get you started. Think about relaxing music. It all helps, honestly.
You may only need to be on meds for six weeks and there are no side effects. Check out some natural remedies for when you come off these tablets.
Staying off all caffeine helped me, it slowed down my heart rate . You have to take one day at a time and if you can go for short walks, the fresh air works wonders. Keep a diary and put down how you felt during the day and how you slept, it
can help and point you to triggers that start off these feelings.
If you ever need to chat to me then e.mail me, I do understand where you are coming from and I would be happy to chat. Godbless.xxx"
beez replied: "Give it a chance to work and don't feed into what-ifs."
Tania T replied: "I took them for about a week. They made me much worse. I didn't feel hungry so I didn't eat for about 3 days. They made me yawn all day. All around a very unpleasant experience. I will never take them again. Depending on your age they can complicate things more than help."
Can and will Topamax reduce weight gain with the Prozac? - PLEASE HELP!!!? Im using Prozac,60mg for OCD and it seems to be quiet effective. My appetite seems to be gone, but I seem to have constipation. I was previously on Zoloft, 175 mg, before I discontinued it due to costs and weight gain. I am using generic Prozac becuase its cheap and have started taking 25mg of Topamax with each Prozac capsule.
I am quite worried about the weight gain as I am athletic and I have gained 11 pounds with Zoloft. So far, after using Prozac for +-5 weeks my weight appears to be stable. I don`t want gain, and I want to get back to what I was. I do excerise and all, but it just bothers me. I do know what SSRIs are and how they work and their side effects and so on, so I don`t need an explanation - I also know about Wellbutrin and Effexor and so on. But generic prozac is CHEAP!!
My strategy is to take 25mg Topamax (Topiramate) tablets with every dose of Prozac (20mg) I take a 20mg dose three times a day.
Has any1 had any luck?Experiences/opinions/inputs and stories please?
jamlinrich replied: "Are you being prescribed the Topamax? What does your doctor say? I tried Topomax to combat weight gain and saw no real difference, certainly not enough to use it for that purpose alone. I totally feel your pain since I have gained about 50 lbs over the last ten years while getting my mental health care under control but all the medicines do is increase appetite. I found that a diet supplement helps with that better than an additional medication. Good luck."
Prozac and insomnia...any ideas? I take 40mg prozac per day for bulemia and it works great, my only side effect is that it worsens my already present insomnia. The lack of sleep is really starting to get to me but I don't want to stop taking prozac b/c it's the only thing that has worked for me. I have melatonin tablets but the difference is barely noticable. What can I do to get some more sleep?
Ducoing Industries replied: "Even if you cannot go to sleep, close you eyes and rest. Closing your eyes automatically eases your brain as it generates alpha waves from the back of your brain. Eventually you will get drowsy--but you must close your eyes and not open them even if you cannot go to sleep."
Dr Frank - prozac question for u? i started taking prozac 2 days ago and today im feeling quite low and sick, is it the tablets or is it too soon for them to be causing mild side effects
kityktz K replied: "prozac has been around a long time but with any type of antidepressant you should be monitored and report any questions to your doctor. I think prozac stays in the system longer than some other types of antidepressants and I think after two days you might notice a change in how you feel.
You should ask your pharmacist who would know exactly how prozac affects the system."
echelon replied: "I'm not Dr Frank, but Prozac will cause you to experience some side-effects straight away. These should wear off after about 10-14 days. The full antidepressant effect won't kick in until you've been taking them for about 6-8 weeks."
kmax27 replied: "It usually takes at least a full week for you to feel any effect from the Prozac."
funksoulfx replied: "Nope, side effects with prozac are quite common. They make people feel sluggish alot of the time and these mild side effects are normal.
No it's not to soon for the side effects to be kicking in. If you feel uncomfortable consult your GP and ask for an alternate medication.
There is non-pre ion alternatives to prozac. St. John's Wort is very good and has under half the amount of side effects than Prozac. However St. John's Wort can make certain people more sensitive to light and any females using the contraceptive pills are at risk of it failing. St. John's Wort is effective to help combat mild/moderate depression but certain studies have found it to improve sleep and OCD as well. The effects of anti-depression should only take 4-6 weeks. If you don't notice any other changes after 8-10 weeks, talk to your GP for something other than Prozac.
Just a heads up.
Hope this helps.

wee g replied: "U can start feeling side effects almost right away but prozac/fluoxtetine wont start working for 2 weeks, this is coming from a pharmacy point of view."

cufty mcdade replied: "I take it without having any snide effects."
misskitty replied: "My Dr. said it should take 3-4 weeks to notice a change, but everyone around me noticed in about 5-6 days, it depends on your body how you metabolize meds, not the standard for everyone, PS I've had good results with the stuff."
