Could getting off Effexor cause pain in my right side? I've been having a dull, aching pain in my right side just below the bottom rib off and on for a couple of weeks. I have been reducing my dosage of Effexor the past two months and just stopped taking it five days ago. Could it be related somehow? I've already had my gallbladder removed (years ago) so it's not that. Any ideas?

djave replied: "is she heavy then?"

Christine S replied: "The right side could also be your appendix, which I went through in December of 2006--but you would really feel like crap and run a fever if you had appendicitus, at least I did! The pain would wake me up at night though it got so bad. But the Effexor part I haven't heard about that being a withdrawal side effect--maybe call your pharmacist and ask if they've heard of that? I sure hope it's not your appendix though!! Good luck!"

Have you stopped taking Effexor and experienced the long list of dreaded side effects? Three days ago I stopped taking Effexor after slowly reducing the dosage over the past two months from 300mg to 37.5mg. I have been taking Effexor 150mg for about 7 years now, and have been dreading going off this drug as suggested by my doctor, after about a year of debating whether they actually do anything for me. I am now suffering the long list of side effects. I am so dumb struck as to the complete change in my character in just 24hrs. I have gone from been normal to experiencing, Panic Attacks, unbelievable crazy and scary dreams, nausia, irritability, dizzyness, numbness in my hands, pins and needles, and sever depression. Does anyone know how long this may last ? Can you give me some advice to cope with these feelings? This is so incredibly scary..

jenny w replied: "I had all the same side effects as you but my doctor put me on something else so it wouldn't be bad. It will probably last a few weeks it took me ages to get of them because i couldn't cope with the side affects. Good luck."

misspink replied: "yes it is..i was on this and though i did feel better on it..was hell to come off...i dont think your weaning off slow enough for this drug..its potent..i would start again...and take the smallest dose..for a few days till you feel better...what i used to do while i was weaning off was...skip one day then the next day take it..then skip a day and so on...even though i was tapering off the amounts.aswell...then once i knew i wasnt getting too many side affects i would skip 2 days then 3 then 4...but over a good 12 months...even like this it was hard asi got really bad dizziness and felt weird and confused..i had brain zaps..like shocks..horrible...so taper your dosage..and then lower your days to take them...see how you go..but i wouldnt be just never taking them again..while you feel like this...take a dose now...and you will start to feel better again soon"

Effexor XR & Eczema - Why? I am currently tapering off of Effexor XR. I was previously taking 300mg/day and, starting June, have been slowly tapering. I am now taking ~20mg/day. Every time I reduce my Effexor dosage, my mouth becomes itchy, swollen, red, and dry. I saw a dermatologist who said it was eczema, which I've had in other places before. I'm currently treating the eczema with hydrocortisone ointment. The dermatologist didn't really have an answer for what was causing the eczema, and couldn't tell me if it was the Effexor. I doubt the eczema is caused by my toothpaste or makeup, b/c I use those daily...but I only have eczema for 1-5 days after I change my Effexor dosage. The prescribing doctor...well, doctors...have been no help. Every doctor I've had while I've been on this has told me that "no one has side effects from this medication" and that I "shouldn't be experiencing any problems." The doctor who took me down from 300mg to 225 initially tried to take me all the way down to 150mg in one jump, but I found the "non-existent" side effects (brain zaps, nausea, irritability, agitation) inconsistent with my job. If it were up to him I'd have only taken two weeks to come off of this, and I don't doubt that would have been a disaster. Googling Effexor, withdrawal, and eczema does create a few hits. But no one seems to know why, or really understand why I want to know why. So, if you have any idea, I'd be interested in hearing it. Speculation is fine with me. This is mostly an academic curiosity...although my mouth would like to know.

Billme replied: "Hi, Yes stress is the root cause of eczema in many cases. I have been helping a friend get rid of his psoriasis on his skin, it covers about 2 square feet of his arms and hands. He has been spraying on 2.5 PH water for about a month now, and it is working. He is also drinking 9.5 PH water. His wife has MS, and is also drinking the 9.5 PH alkaline water, and is doing much better. You can get free alkaline water - place a wanted add on Here is a demo video to watch for the eczema cure as seen in Japan. Sorry but the hospitals in the United States and Europe are not this advanced at this time. Allergies to food include shellfish, garlic, and others. Stop eating things like cheese, then milk products, then anything brewed (beer, yogurt, breads made with yeast). When it goes away, then you have some idea of what you should stop eating. Or use the process developed in Japan, and eat what you want to. Good Luck !"

Gard23 replied: "It could be be related to the antihistamine-type action of the drug - now that the dose is coming down that is lessening, and people do experience various forms of dermatological reactions during withdrawal, usually itching, but others are reported. It's interesting that it seems to be a self-limiting response after a dose drop... given Effexor's extremely short half-life, that does seem a pretty conclusive reaction. Also check-out the less well-known anticholinergic properties of the drug... e.g. mouth dryness. Or the connection between Effexor and glossitis. Or the connection between Effexor and mucous membranes. Yes, these are side-effects, but it stands to reason that they could also be triggered by the reduction of the drug since it appears common for side-effects to also be withdrawal effects."

When reducing your antidepressant dosage, are headaches common? Specifically, with Effexor XR, was 225 mg day, went to 187.5 day.

mowuseni replied: "well.... generally headaches are sometimes seen with withdrawl symptoms"

dgs_in_gv replied: "Yes. Headaches can occur when you reduce dosage of an antidepressant. Usually it is a short term side effect. You might want to try taking 225 one day then 187.5 the next for a week or so in order to reduce on a more gradual basis and reduce the possibility of headaches."
