What are the side effects of IMITREX nasal spray for migraines? Is there drowsiness?
Chas replied: "Click on the blue link"
smartsassysabrina replied: "Some people say drowsiness but I've done the nasal spray, pills, and injections and never had it. I've found that I had neck and throat pain, and burning from the nasal spray. With the injectable I got a metallic taste in the mouth, which is very strong and I can see it causing nausea in someone not used to it. Often when I get migraines I also take a phenergan pill which causes drowsiness."
junie101278 replied: "no drowsiness, but my husband takes it and it can burn pretty bad for the 1st few min. but, it is safer than the injections, if you have more ?'s plz feel free to email me from my profile and I or my husband can answer any of your concerns, he has very bad cluster headaches and has been on them for years."
Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Perhaps you could investigate a web search for magnesium + migraines. Magnesium in some cases could act as a laxative but this usually requires large amounts."
Migraines & Imitrex - side effects? I have had a bad mirgaine on and off for awhile now. I was taking Midren but wasn't getting much relief. My dr called in Imitrex today. I will take my first pill very soon (I want something on my stomach first) & I am scared of the side effects.
I am always very nervous about any new meds because I've had just a few bad cases of reaction. Usually they are antibotics and I know Imitrex is nothing like an antibotic.
So are there any side effects I should be aware of? I read about feeling warm and maybe numb. That creeped me OUT!
one_goofy_devil replied: "i take imitrex.. and it works great.. i have taken it on an empty stomach also with no side affects.. the only thing i can notice is sometimes it does make me a little sleepy.. but not bad.... and it usually works within a half hour for me.. if it doesnt.. you should be able to take another in 2 hrs
hope this helps, feel better :)"
JST1126 replied: "I found this on drugs.com.
More common side effects may include:
Burning sensation, dizziness or vertigo, feeling of heaviness, feeling of tightness, flushing, mouth and tongue discomfort, muscle weakness, nausea (nasal spray), neck pain and stiffness, numbness, pressure sensation, redness at the site of injection, sinus or nasal discomfort (nasal spray), sore throat, tingling, unusual taste (nasal spray), vomiting (nasal spray), warm/cold sensation"
cindyhonstine replied: "Imitrex made me dizzy and overheated. You need to drink a whole glass of water each time you take a pill. There is a list of side effects located on the site below."
Stoli J replied: "I've been taking imitrex for almost 10 years now. I have also been prescribed midrin which I still take occasionally, but for the full blown migraine my medication of choice is definately Imitrex. I doubt you will notice any side effects at all. I didn't have much luck with the pill form at first and am now taking the nasal spray which is wonderful, but I've been starting to take the pills again from time to time and they work better than they used to. The only side effect I've ever experienced is from the injection which made me extremely nauseated. I love this medication, just wish it wasn't so expensive!"
Symphony A replied: "Imitrex is a great drug. You may have some side effects, but they should be minimal. When I took the pills, I did feel the warm sensation and a tingly feeling down my spine. These sensations weren't that bad really. They came on like a whoosh feeling and I didn't mind it because I knew it was working. In about 15 minutes after that whoosh feeling, my migraine would be gone.
It does make you sleepy sometimes, especially if you take it once a full- blown migraine is in effect. Seems when I caught the migraine before it started , I experienced less tiredness with the pills. Also, sometimes I felt a little dizzy and had cloudy thinking, but I just slept it off.
Make sure not to drive on them.
Never really got nausea from them, it seemed to help rid me of the nausea I got with the migraine.
The spray tasted bad in the back of my throat and sometimes stung behind my eye
I have horrible migraines and the benefits of this drug outweighed the side effects for me.
Hope they work for you - they changed my life, allowing me to function rather than suffer - just can't afford the price of them sometimes."
dbgyog replied: "Alternate systems of medicine can only help you.
There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES,
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy, BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.
Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.
Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole.
Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong.
If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.
For forehead pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below.
It may disappear naturally too.

Imitrex side effects normal? Took an Imitrex 50mg today for the first time, was just prescribed about a week ago for migraines I get occasionally. Felt the "aura" and panic'd and took one. Seems like it's helped ward off some of the photophobia and sensitivity to sound, but god, the Imitrex seems like it came with it's own problems.
Are any of these dangerous? I'm feeling almost as bad all over as I would have felt in my head if I just refrained from the Imitrex. Really (I mean very bad) muscle aches, throat pain, sinus pain, dizziness, extreme pressure on the chest making it hard to breathe, short of breath, sweating, tingling all over, nauseated, tightness in most major muscles - feels like they're tensed up, but they aren't, and an overall very "sick feeling" - don't know how to describe it, I could have these symptoms and not feel "sick" but my brain seems to be telling me "You're sick, bub".
I've never had a reaction like this to any medication before, including a whole range of opiates, benzodiazepines, SSRIs, etc. But this is freaking me out, especially the difficulty breathing part.
And if it is dangerous, is there anything I can do to reverse the effects of Imitrex, like another drug handily available? I'll ride it out if need be, I'm just generally unwilling to go to the hospital (hate those places).
slickmickeygal replied: "i've personally never taken it, but my ex used to be on them, he would hulcinate really badly and then the nauseousnes and muscle tightness... its probably too high a dose for you. i would talk to your dr and see if taking half a pill is something you should try (or maybe they come in a smaller dose - idk)
how long have you been feeling like this? i'd say drink some water and just go lay down for a little while. in a couple hours if you're still feeling like this, or if it gets worse at any point, call your dr right away and see if they want you to go to the ER."
I took Imitrex for the first time today and began to have bad pain in left shoulder blade, side effect? My doctor told me to take one 100mg Imitrex and 4 OTC ibuprofen. I'm thinking it was too much or something because I had bad side effects like sweating and out of it and panicky type feelings, also had bad pain in my shoulder blade and mildly out of breath (although this could be from the anxiety of being worried about this) I didn't read the side effects before I took it and then read that heart problems are potential...anyone have any insight? i dont want to go to the ER for something that could just be a muscle spasm or something wierd from the medicine since I dont really have the money for it
bleu_jay_jingles replied: "OK - first; I wouldn't take Imitrex and Ibuprofen together until you've taken Imitrex a few more times. Then, I'd work my way UP to 4 otc's of ib.
First time I took Imitrex, I had the sweats, too.
If you take it again and get the sweats, go to the ER or talk to your doctor, depending on what the side-affect guide says (I can't remember). I don't know what to tell you about the shoulder pain.

good luck!!"
Starting using Topamax. How common is the weight loss side effect? I suffer from persistent migraines. I'm 15 years old and my doctor has recently prescribed me Topamax. She told me weight loss is a side effect and that I have to come in in about 6 months to check on my weight. How common is weight loss in teens while using this pill? Will the pill Imitrex push weight loss to occur even more? (My doctor put me on Imitrex as well.)
[[ice cream]] replied: "My mom takes Topamax for her epilepsy. When she first started it, I didn't notice she had any kind of weight loss. So I guess its not that common. she's been on it for a few years I think."
jcp_wings replied: "i got put on both of these as well! Its actually all about your dose. they warned me too and made a big fuss about having to get my weight checked because i had to get my dose upped a few times (ive been on the topamax about two years now)
the thing is, it can effect you, but it might not. do you want to loose weight? at first I wanted to, but I had an ed, so you know. Im up to 200mg 2x a day (that wasnt my start though, I dont know what your on?) I felt pretty nauseous at first, but because I knew that I had to eat, I could, so I dont really think it has that much of an effect. apparently for the weight loss to be a side effect, you have to be on the seizure dose (or the weight loss dose for obese people) and thats 600 or 800 mg 2x a day, depending on your starting weight. but my doctor still monitored me pretty carefully because i had an ed when i started, and i did notice i didnt crave anything really, i just ate because i knew it was time to eat. that might just be me though, because my metabolism is weird because of my ed and whatnot.
anyway, it pretty much depends on your dose. the imitrex though does nothing to add to weight loss, thats not a daily medicine. it does have weird side effects though that actually bothered me alot more than the topomax, like my throat muscles would relax and id involuntarily move my head like a weirdo. haha but they really work! good luck!"
Taking inderal for headaches and the side effects? I currently get about 4-5 bad headaches a month. I take Imitrex to releive them and it works great. But my doc thinks I am still getting too many headaches in a month. He prescribed me Inderal to take daily, but I am worried about taking it. I read up on the side effects. I was just wondering if anyone can tell me any side effects they have experienced and how long it took for them to go away.
Patti C replied: "The only side effect I had from it was trouble sleeping at first. It went away after a few weeks. Inderal did not work for me alone. I took it along with amytriptaline. The combination worked well for several years until I finally "outgrew" these migraines."
I have severe joint pain, is it a medication side effect? The pain is in my shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, and knees.
I also have a headache, and stomach pain, but I always have that.
I take-
Wellbutrin XL
Remeron
Imitrex
Atarax
I don't know if this is a side effect of a medication, or if I should go to a doctor tomorrow.
(Oh and if it helps, I'm 14)
Yes I do have depression and migrains and anxiety. Already crossed that bridge, that's why I take those meds.
But yeah I am going to the doctor. Better to be hit in the face with a shovel and called a hypocondriac then not go and die from like some rare creepo disease thing fjklf;jghajkshd;fljdskhfga
Thanks guys.
troublewolf54 replied: "first. tell a parent! any, or most of the drugs you are on can give you joint pain. sounds like youu havemigrainess and some depression problems...that too can affect your joints. I would advise you to tell a parent and perhaps call the the doctor. at least call the place where you get your meds filled and ask them about side-effects. take care of yourself!"
mr.bigz replied: "yes ,see your doctor ,he should know what your problem is--one of the reasons for young people having these problems is given below-
but it could be other things,so let the expert doctor decide for you"
c r replied: "Take your parents to the website below. There are many Pro athletes who swear by this stuff. You can also read what they say about it there.
It seems to be a cure all for ailments. And no drugs involved.

What is a good migraine medication that is comparable to Topamax, without the side effects? I had been taking Topamax for migraines. I was on 400mg a day and it helped really well, but recently found I have a kidney stone due to using Topamax so I am trying to find a different med. I can take for it. For those of you that don't know, Topamax is used to prevent migraines, not to help with the pain. If anyone has personal experience I would prefer your answer. I don't want answers like imitrex, maxalt, zomig, as these are to treat the pain after you have gotten a migraine. I want an answer for a med to prevent the migraines. Thanks in advance.
brittenybryant replied: "most likely, if its comparable to topamax, it will have the same side effects"
DAZY M replied: "Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or
neck. Headaches can becaused by minor problems like
eyestrain, lack of coffee or moreserious reasons like
head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis andmeningitis.
Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side
effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information

Some Dude replied: "http://www.neurologyreviews.com/feb04/nr_feb04_foramen.html"
has anyone used the imitrex injection? I get horrible migraines and my doctor gave the the imitrex injection and i wanted to know if anyone has used it and if it worked for the or they had any side effects? Has anyone used it?
also...where do you inject it? i was told i could do it on my thigh, upper arm or stomach, i am thinking my thigh would be best, what has worked best for you?
versantly replied: "Imitrex injection is great stuff -it works in 5 minutes for me. i take Imitrex pills for acute migraines and a daily med to reduce the symptoms. it is an older med, but the only effective one for me. side effects of the pill include chest pain and shortness of breath. since i'm under the care of a neurologist, there is no concern of heart disease for me."
Sky replied: "I have used it and it helps with my most severe migraines. The side effects that I have noticed are flushing and tingling of my skin within a few minutes of the injection, a small amount of chest tightness for a few minutes, and tiredness. Though the side effects are uncomfortable, they only last a few minutes, and the benefit of not having a migraine 20 minutes later make it all worth it IMO.
My thigh was the easiest place for me. If you are going to have someone else give it to you, I'd suggest the upper arm. Good luck and I hope it works!"
emt_me911 replied: "I used the Imitrex injection when it first came on the market (I was in the trial group for it before it was released to the general public). It did work for a while but I built up a resistance to it within a year. I have not used it in years. Since then, I have been taking a medication that reduces the frequency and severity of migraines and now I only get them 3-4 times a year. When I used the injection, I injected in my thigh. Shots are no big deal for me as I am a diabetic and I take 4-6 insulin shots a day. For migraine relief now, I take oral Toradol. It works for me. One good thing about Toradol is that it is a non-narcotic painkiller. It gets rid of the pain without the euphoric effects of drugs such as Demerol of Percocet. I can function normally."
