Synthroid and weight gain/loss? Many months ago i was 167 and all muscle then the nurse put me on synthroid and i lost 32 pounds and i hated it. Now i guess they increased my dosage, because its 125 now and it says something elese different on the bottle. It says drink plenty of water. Why do you have to drink plenty of water while taking synthroid? And will it help me gain my weight back again? I never needed to loose any weight my whole life because i've always been skinny except 3 or 4 years ago when i was 182 pounds of muscle. I'm not worried about getting fat because that's impossible for my body type because i have lean muscle at 137 pounds.
star replied: "Taking Synthroid interfers with your thyriod. which changes with your thyroid can effect your body as far as weight gain or weight loss."
Paul Ding replied: "If you think you're getting the wrong dose of synthroid (Levothyroxine), you are probably right. Levothyroxine has a narrow therapeutic index. Regardless of the indication for use, careful dosage titration is necessary to avoid the consequences of over- or under-treatment.
These consequences include, among others, effects on growth and development, cardiovascular function, bone metabolism, reproductive function, cognitive function, emotional state, gastrointestinal function, and on glucose and lipid metabolism.
Many drugs interact with levothyroxine sodium necessitating adjustments in dosing to maintain therapeutic response.
If you don't stay hydrated when taking synthroid, that increases the concentration in your blood, and you're overdosing.
No ethical doctor would put anyone on synthroid in order to help them lose weight. Many people taking synthroid, in fact, are stereotypically fat Type 2 diabetics. It's pretty easy for them to lose weight - all they have to do is stop taking their insulin. Of course, that can lead to ketoacidosis, which is too often fatal, but if you expect to be slim and healthy at that same time, that's asking a bit much!"
Can Synthroid cause weight gain? ? I was put on synthroid (for underactive thyroid) almost 3 months ago and I've gained 10-15 lbs since. I thought this was supposed to correct metabolic problems and increase weight LOSS!!! I'm so frustrated. At the same time, the dr also put me on the Lowest dose possible of the steroid, dexamethasone but I quit taking it a few weeks ago bc I thought it could have been causing the weight thing. But I still seem to be gaining. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! WTF. Is it possible to gain on synthroid? Or Could such a low dose of steroid have caused the problem? If so, I would have thought I would start losing once I stopped it. HELP! what is going on??? My dr is a jerk and will have a cynical comment about it so I don't want to ask him if it's the meds.So someone please help if you can...
Lindsay Lu replied: "Well you could always ask your pharmacist. But if you don't have a good doctor you should find a good one, because it's really important to be able to trust and talk to him about your concerns."
BroknWing replied: "The underactive thyroid could cause weight gain since it slows your metabolism. Go back to the Doctor, the can run the blood tests to determine if you are on the right dosage."
tootal2 replied: "not enough synthroid can make you gain weight. You might be under dosed. your tsh should be between 1 and 3"
Raven replied: "If you just started on Synthroid, you need to be monitored and have blood tests done fairly frequently to determine if you're on the right dosage. If your doctor prescribed other medications as well, but you're not taking them, you need to tell him that. A combination of medications that your doctor thinks you're on will not have the effect he expects on your overall health. This is something you'll have to discuss with the doctor.
You can't just stop taking medications when you have a thyroid problem (or any chronic problem requiring meds, for that matter) because the medications work together in certain ways. You might need your dosage of Synthroid adjusted if you refuse to take the steroid.
Lastly, Synthroid is not going to magically make you lose weight. Once you are at the right dosage, you still need to use diet and exercise to lose any weight your lowered metabolism made you pack on. You'll need to have your dosage monitored for the rest of your life.
Your doctor may be a jerk, but he's got more experience with and knowledge of thyroid problems than you do."
Is it normal to gain weight while taking synthroid? I have been taking synthroid for two months now and I had a couple of side effects but instead of loosing some weight I have gained is this normal??
dooneygirl@sbcglobal.net replied: "yes i gained weight too when i took the same medication"
coastgirl replied: "yes, for some of us it is... you should stable out once your system gets use to them...and adjusted to the right dosage...it you don't you might try going to the original form instead of the synthroid... Like Armour is the true thyroid medicine. Hope this helps and I speak from experience...very frustrating putting on the weight."
mom of a boy and girl replied: "Interesting question because I too have gained weight. On synthroid many years (8) and 40 lbs overweight...Hope you get a doctor to answer this Q..
My problem is that I am Hypothyroid and I need the thyroid medication for the rest of my life.....I take 1 a day."
Butt Pirate replied: "I actually lost weight on that med."
thenextlikemike23@Yahoo.com replied: "sure fatty"
DNA replied: "While you won't lose weight from Synthoid, you should stop gaining weight. Gaining weight is usually a sign you are not on enough medication. Your doctor is probably keeping you too high in range. Most need the morning TSH below 2.0, usually around 1.0. With this condition, its best to learn as much as you can. Only then will you seek out the care where you have no symptoms.

Synthroid and weight gain? My 4 year old son has hyperthyroidism, diangosed by his doctor. It took a avery long time to diangose his with this. He was always so hungry, and would eat a lot, but not grow at all! He stayed the same size for almost a year! And was starting to fall off the growth charts for a child his age.
Unfortuently, Social Services took him from us because of 'failure to thrive,' Since taking him, they placed him on the medicine Synthroid.
He has gained 20 pounds in 6 months.
I dont understnad why they waited to put him on medicine? Then use it against us? We just did what they doctors recommended at the time.
Also, does Synthroid cause weight gain when it is being used to treat Hyperthyroidism?
Thanks!
outlawguy89 replied: "It doesn't cause weight gain, it just cancels out the effect of Hyperthyroidism.
I'm also sorry about the 'Failure to Thrive'."
I am a 19 y/o male who may have hypothyroidism, will I gain weight on synthroid? The doctor is testing me for hypothyroidism. I am 19, 5'10 1/2, and 180 Lbs. I have read online briefly about it and have seen a lot of people gain weight when put on levothyroxin (synthroid). I thought the purpose was to maintain your metabolism, therefore stabilizing wight. Most of these posters were middle-aged women, so maybe it different for someone like me. Does anyone know if it causes weight gain? What should I expect when put on it?
cbrdgt replied: "Generally speaking, when you are truly hypothyroid, you are not a "normal" weight/ have trouble losing it. A side effect of Synthroid is excessive hungry, I have never heard of anyone with it. You are right about the purpose of levothyroxine, so I'm not sure what those middle aged women were experiencing. You seem like a pretty average weight for your height. I have experienced weight loss from Synthroid, but I am purposefully made hyperthyroid to keep cancer away. I think if you are truly hypothyroid and are put on Synthroid, you will find it easier to lose weight (if you find it difficult right now)... I highly doubt you'll gain weight."
Synthroid..any weight gain/loss experiences? I've heard that it can cause increased appetite, just wondering if anyone's taken it.
Dan K replied: "well hypothyroid causes decrease appetite so the medication is only correcting your body REAlly"
synthroid medicine make you gain weight? I am 15 years old and i got diagnosed with a synthroid problem. It wasn't low but it wasn't to high eather it was just on the edge 3.0 any higher would be a to high thyroid level. My doctor put me on "Synthroid Levothryroxine sodium tablets, USP 100 mcg ( 0.1 mg ). Im scared to be takeing it because im afraid i might gain weight. Can anyone tell me if thats true because i herd alot of people say that have and if you do im certanly not going on it!! help!
sunny replied: "Thyroid hormone (like synthroid) should increase your metabolism, not decrease it. Weight gain and fatigue is often a reason they will check your thyroid hormone level so gaining weight on it doesn't make sense to me."
Alabama replied: "Sunny is right, you should lose weight on it."
I'm confused...will Synthroid help me lose weight or make me gain weight? Within the last 6 months, I noticed some weight gain and irregular periods. Long story short, I've been told that I have hypothyroidism. My doctor has prescribed me with Synthoid and I've been taking it for a week or so. I thought I would lose some of the excess weight but I have been feeling like I am gaining weight. Now reading on line, some people say that they gained weight! Is there a correct answer?
wiseolguy replied: "You will loose weight. It make take some time to get the levels adjusted, have regular blood checks, and once the levels are good you should feel a lot more energetic"
