Tamoxifen Reaction Posts in Q&A
Has anyone had any reaction to the drug tamoxifen? I have broken out in a rash on the back of my wrist and around my breast. I'm not sure if it is a reaction to the meds or not. Please tell me what you think. I have also spotted and I've gone through menopause already a few years ago.

sophie replied: "Please check with your MD, there are a lot of side effects from tamoxifen and you should notify you physician if you suspect side effects, or allergic reactions."

doctor_amk replied: "no you should ask doctor"

Reesie replied: "If you are post-menopausal, then tamoxifen is not the drug for you, you would instead be on one of the aromatase inhibitors. Tamoxifen is only to be used for women who are not yet done with menopause since it targets the estrogen that is from the ovaries. Ask your doctor about the aromatase inhibitors."

Beatle replied: "Call the pharamcy where you got the meds and ask the pharmacist. Here's a site I found about the medication, scroll down for side effects."

blondambition replied: "YES I take it and I also got a similar rash, my oncologist said up to 45% do get a rash! Let your doctor know, they can prescribe a cream to help get it under control. I use something called Psorcan and it does wonders."

jayaraman replied: "I do not think your getting rashes are side effects of taking Tamosifen. Tamoxifen is an oral selective estrogen receptor modulator which is used in breast cancer treatment, and is currently the world's largest selling breast cancer treatment. It is used for the treatment of early and advanced breast cancer in pre- and post-menopausal women. It is also approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the reduction of the incidence of breast cancer in women at high risk of developing the disease. It has been further approved for the reduction of contralateral (in the opposite breast) breast cancer.Tamoxifen competes with oestrogen in the body for oestrogen receptors in breast tissue so that tran ion of oestrogen-responsive genes is inhibited. Tamoxifen was invented by ICI Pharmaceuticals (now AstraZeneca) and is sold under the brand names Nolvadex, Istubal, and Valodex. Tamoxifen is also used to treat infertility in women with anovulatory disorders. A dose of 10-40 mg per day is administered in days 3-7 of a woman's cycle. Side effects Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator. Even though it is an antagonist in breast tissue it acts as partial agonist on the endometrium. Therefore endometrial changes, including cancer, are among tamoxifen's side effects. SO BEST THING IS TO CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR WHO PRESCRIBED THIS MEDICINE AND HE WILL FIND OUT THE REASON FOR THE RASHES OR GIVEN AFTERNATE SUGGESTIONS."

Pume replied: "I`m taking tamoxifen since Jan. 06, other than hot and old flashed i have side effects. Go and see your doctor about it"

Kristin C replied: "Rash and vaginal bleeding are both possible side effects from Tamoxifen. You need to notify your physician and let him/her know about the side effects. To clarify a previous responders answer, Tamoxifen is indicated for both pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women with hormone receptor positive breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors (like Arimidex, Femara, and Aromasin) are indicated for post-menopausal women only with hormone receptor positive breast cancer."

librarylady replied: "Please check with your doctor - I was on Tamoxifen for two years, I had to go in last year for a small recurrance of my bc to be removed and had a battery of tests, including one which showed me to be post-menopausal, as you are. I had had no particular problems with Tamoxifen but was very concerned about the possible side effects on my cardio-vascular system, especially as several family members have a history of cardio-vascular problems. I'm now on Arimidex - which is only OK for post-menopausal women - and so far, so good. I am getting some hair thinning and aching joints - but these are not life threatening. I would definitely check with your doctor as this rash sounds really uncomfortable and worrying and if it is a side effect of Tamoxifen then, since you are post-menopausal, s/he may consider changing your medication as they did mine. Good luck!"

nimbleminx replied: "I had quite a few problems with tamoxifen. My doctor switched me to Arimidex."

Anyone developed an allergy / allergic reaction or rash after taking Tamoxifen? My mum is currently taking Tamoxifen following treatment for breast cancer and has developed a severe rash. The McMillan nurse says that she hasn't seen anything like it before as a reaction to Tamoxifen so I wondered whether anyone else has to rule it out as the cause.

Soozy replied: "A rash is definitely included in the possible side-effects of Tamoxifen. Has your mum just started taking it? Allergies typically start after the second dose. Get her to see a GP urgently, even tonight if possible - she may need some steroid treatment if the rash is severe. Because of the breast cancer her immune system may already be low, especially if she's recently had chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. The prescribing doctor will probably need to fill in the 'yellow card' at the back of the British National Formulary - this is the book that doctors use to prescribe drugs. They list all the known side-effects and if a severe one develops they should let the BNF know so that can be included in the next edition. Hopefully your mum will be given an alternative to Tamoxifen and make a good recovery. Good luck :)"

shariwharton replied: "never heard of a reaction to it before - poor thing shes going through enough without that happening to her."

twinkle star replied: "my mum takes tamoxifen tablets too but she is fine she has now been taking theem for 3 years maybe shes allergic to one of the ingredients i think they might contain asparine or something? hope ur mum gets better xx"

Seyi A replied: "I've seen a lot of patients wlth cancer of the breast on tamoxifen , I'm still to come across one with the rash you have desribed. Is she on other drugs?"

maj replied: "After 5 years of taking tamoxifen, I did not have rash problems but the hot fashes were a major problem!"

mickey replied: "I have a rash. I'm not sure if it is from the tamoxifen. I think mine might be from the radiation I had. I went to a dermatologist, and he diagnosed me with lichen plantus. I am taking a steriod cream to get rid of the rash. My rash itches a lot."

hello replied: "I took Tamoxifen. I never got a rash. My mood however changed dramatically. I said something to the doctor. He told me that was one of the rare side effects. He switched me to Femara. I like to let people know that. I felt much better exactly 3 weeks after I stopped taking it. Hope your mom has many more years to come."
