Did your acne come back when you stopped taking Tetracycline? I'm 3 months in to the 6-month supply of Tetracycline that I was prescribed. (I started with 1000 mg/day and dropped to 500 mg about a month ago.) I've struggled with terrible acne for about 8 years and this stuff is working WONDERS. (I've read up on the stuff and know about all the side effects, so please don't bother. If you saw my skin, you'd know the risks were well worth it.) I'd like to go off the stuff after the 6 months, but will my acne come back? I feel like it is too harsh of a drug to be taking for years at a time, but the results are like a dream come true. Has anyone stopped taking it and has NOT see a relapse in their acne?

summerB replied: "It depends on the person...after 6 months I went back to the doctor and he put me on another 6 month cycle but in the end it worked and they didn't come back. Of course you will have the occasional pimple but nothing at all like I used to have."

Mon Ray replied: "No, baby, acne is a disease. That oral medication doesn't cure it, it suppresses it. Once you stop taking it, the acne will come back. I take oral meds, too, but a different kind. What you need is a good moisturizer for your face. I'm guessing you experience some dryness with the drug? You can take it for a while longer. My medication is strong, too, and I've been on it for quite a while."

deanoxplod6 replied: "nope i got off it 6 yrs a go and have not had a major break out since. best thing i ever did!"

I just started taking tetracycline for acne. How long will my acne be worse before it starts to improve? I just started taking tetracycline, one 500mg capsule daily, for mild-to-moderate acne. My doctor warned me that my acne would get worse before it gets better. How long should it take before my acne improves? Also, should I continue to use over-the-counter topical treatments in addition to the tetracycline? Thanks!

Jillian C replied: "It usually takes around two weeks to really see results. It's up to you if you want to use other topical stuff. I think it's important to keep your skin hydrated (because antibiotics can cause you to have dry skin). Make sure you're using a good cleanser as well!"

Sophi replied: "For the most reliable answer, you should call or email your doctor and ask him. That way you will know for sure, without a doubt! :)"

Vanessa replied: "i took it as well and would say about 2-3 weeks. yes, definitely continue to use the topical treatments as well. my doctor paired it with retin a micro gel and it worked GREAT. but the topical medicine made my skin VERY dry. it would literally peel....gross. if you do use a topical medication, i would sugget keeping lotion with you when you go out. but for me tretracycline worked wonders and even though i've stopped with it my skin is much better."

Clara C replied: "Tetracycline is penicillin, an antibiotic. In general, an antibiotic needs a constant level to really work. 2 weeks should be enough time for you to see some affects. The most important thing to remember is to take the pills on a regular basis. Don't miss or postpone taking your dosages. Every time the level of antibiotics in your system decreases, will increase the # of days necessary to see the results. Try to take it at the same time every day. I would hold off using any other topical treatments in order to see if the tetracycline is working first. If it doesn't work for you, try googling "all about zits". There is a new topical cream that they say works wonders and you can get it for under $20. The commercial is on television. Remember to keep your hands off your face...hands are filthy! Good Luck! *** It's "truth about zits"...saw the commercial last night. Sorry for the mistake."

Air replied: "skin turns over every week, so i'd wait at least till then. however you should never rely on just medication, but should be making lifestyle changes - like drinking TONS more water, exercise, wearing no (or only the right type of) makeup - ie. bare minerals you should also use an air purifier in your room at night while you sleep and during the day in whatever room you spend the most amount of time in (ie. work desk/kitchen, etc). when shopping for air purifiers, make sure you don't get an ionic air purifier or an ozone one. i'd check the reference below for specifics. a proper air purifier cleans the oxygen, and pure oxygen kills indoor air pollutants as well as bacteria settling on your face"

How Effective Are Doxycycline, Minocycline, and Tetracycline in Treating Acne? I'm taking 200 mg of doxycycline a day for my mild inflammatory acne, and I tried lose dose accutane before that, but it failed. Are doxycycline, minocycline, and tetracycline very effective in teating mild to severe acne? I hope this works, because I've run out of options.

Michelle B replied: "Go to Walmart and purchase some sulfer. It's a yellow powder. Mix it with some type of moisturizer and pat it on the acne. I promise it will work...just DON'T get this in your eyes it burns really bad!"

Roger McGee replied: "I noticed very little change after starting tetracycline. I used it for about 3 months, then gave up. I would not recommend it. All in all, it was a waste of money, stained my teeth (a common side-effect of long-term antibiotics), and made my acne harder to treat because it built up a resistance to antibiotics. From what I have heard (And semi-experienced - although I have never tried accutane), the only oral medication that really consistently works is regular to high dosage Accutane, otherwise just stick with topical stuff. Good luck!"

What can you tell me about the Tetracycline antibiotic for acne? I am 13, and I think my acne is more or less mediocre-severe. I have tried numerous topical treatments, without results. So today my doctor perscribed "Tetracycline" for me. He says there are no side effects, but I'm not one to trust doctors all that much. Err, so I'm wondering, what should I expect? Is this going to completely clear up my skin, or just somewhat improve it? Will it get worse before it gets better? ARE there, infact, side effects? What difference will it make if I DO eat it with food/on a full stomach? Please, do not hesitate! Tell me EVERYTHING you know! Thank you in advanced...and go!

cncoo2001 replied: "I took it when I was younger, it is not a miracle drug, but it does definately help clear it up. I don't remember any side effects and I'm pretty sure I took it on full stomachs sometimes as well. I think you might want to be careful about sun exposure though. Hope this helps."

sly_ca_98 replied: "It depends, I tried it when I was younger and it did nothing for me and my acne was pretty bad. I don't remember of side effects."

lushgirl replied: "no side effects my ass.........tetracycline is an antibiotic....my big side effect issue w/tetracycline has been nausea......it helps to take it when i eat........its an antibiotic and antibiotics are notorious for being harsh on the stomach.......bout a month and a half ago i was riding in a car and had to have the driver pull over so i could puke on the side of the road.... im still taking it tho.....it definately helps with my acne.....well you gotta make some sacrifices but its up to you wot ur willing to endure....but who knows, you may not have any side effects at all, everyone reacts to meds differently.....im just telling you my experience with it.......makes me nauseated but works like a charm....."

Does Doxycycline work better than tetracycline for severe acne? I have been using Doxycycline 100mg for my acne for about1 month now, but it dont seem to be working well for me at all. However, I did alil research online and i find that tetracycline could help my acne, because its stroger than doxycycline, Could that be true??

crazymandan12 replied: "kl styl"

Double Diamonds replied: "I dont know how old you are, but I was told that Doxycycline was given more often for a broad based anti biotic which clears up a wide range of things including acne. I used to take tetracycline and it was good, but I became pregnant while I was on it and my child had a minor bone deformity. Also her milk teeth were stained. I had actually stopped taking them when I got pregnant but they are in your system for about a month after. I read some information on the drug and it is a known side effect. Sometimes, the doctors do things for the right reasons. Try putting sudocreme on bad areas at night. I know it is nappy creme but it does really work wonders."

sdg-FNP replied: "It probably won't make much difference...no. Tetracycline and Doxycycline are VERY similar antibiotics, so one will not likely have any advantage over the other, although doxycycline DOES have a synthetic component that may help. They both cover the same spectrum as far as the offending bacteria that are usually the cause of acne. You might consider switching to an entirely DIFFERENT antibiotic (like Amoxil) or ADDING a topical agent to help (Like Differin or Clindamycin Gel). Talk to your doctor about this. Best of luck!"

Are the tetracycline acne pills good? I need someone who to answer this from experience. Dont use internet resources and research.

Miss Bonnie Parker replied: "I had them for like 2 or 3 years in hight school, I didn't really notice a big difference. Plus, I felt dumb carrying this GIANT pill container around school because you have to take like 2 pills 3 times/day or something. So a giant container only lasts a month. Again, no big change. I didn't have really bad acne though, maybe it works for really bad stuff."

Got pre ion of Tetracycline from doctor for my acne but i can't swallow the tablets? Got pre ion of Tetracycline from doctor for my acne but i can't swallow the tablets. If i go go back to my doctor will there be something else should can offer me to treat acne on my back that doesn't involve swallowing a tablet?

clarry replied: "Why can't you swallow them? If they're big or taste horrible enough to make you gag, you could crush them and put them in liquid..."

BARRY B replied: "Crush them and mix with jam!"

central_powers replied: "Tetracycline is pure garbage! Do NOT use that nonsense! Acne products are a multi-million dollar industry. They are designed to treat your acne, but at the same time, keep making you break out. There is indeed a 100% miracle cure for acne that is cheaper than you could ever imagine!!! It's only 3 bucks for 3 bars of soap! And I swear to God almighty it will work for you no matter what skin type you have! I've used every acne product there is, including proactive which did an OK job, but I always still had at least one pimple at all times. Then I ran out, and I just used my Irish Spring (with aloe) bar soap on my face, and it works 100% of the time. People say it must be the aloe in the soap that does the magic, but I think all those other complex chemicals do a good job of cleaning the skin also. As long as I wash my face really good with Irish Spring every 12 hours, my skin stays perfectly clear. And I can use whatever shaving cream I want, and whatever lotion on my face, and I never get breakouts, except lotion with shea butter or coco-butter (Wash your face in the shower with Irish Spring *before* you shave). The only other thing that makes me break out is Nestle Semi-sweet chocolate chips in cookies. So I never eat any nestle chocolate anymore, just hershey's. I guarantee if you use Irish Spring bar soap (the new one with *aloe*) you will never get another pimple for the rest of your life! It's awesome! I wish I would have known about it back in highschool so I never would have had pimples in the first place, but they didn't have aloe in Irish Spring back then. And I use to get acne constantly on my back when I used coca-butter Tone bar soap. But now with Irish Spring, no pimples anywhere, just nice smooth skin. And the ingredients of Irish Spring are a lot of crazy industrial chemicals, but they do the trick! Better than any organic soap I've tried for acne. I promise you, after trying Irish Spring with aloe, you will thank God I told you about it!"

Does taking Tetracycline for acne decrease the effectiveness of Yaz birth control? I have been on Yaz for a year or so and my doctor just prescribed Tetracycline for me and I was wondering if it decreases the effectiveness of the Yaz. Thanks

Nurse Lisa (soon) replied: "yes tetracycline and all other antibiotic decrease the effectiveness of your pill...plan accordingly if you are going to have sex.."

JeeYa replied: "homemade remedy to clear acne for a lifetime: Things Youll Need: All natural facial soap, as pure as you can get it. Baking Soda Water Benzoyl Peroxide, any strenth Facial Mask, green clay type Clean dry towel Wash your skin lightly with an all-natural bar soap. I use Dr. Bronners Lavender bar soap. Be careful not to scrub your skin. All you need to do is to create a nice lather all over and rinse well with clean water. While your skin is still wet, pour about 2 Tbsp. of Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) into your hand. Add to it just enough water to make a paste. Apply the paste all over your face and light work it around your face in circular motions for about 1 minute. Be careful not to press to hard, just use light circular motions. Rinse well with clean water. Dry your skin by patting it lightly with a towel. Apply the Benzoyl Peroxide ONLY to the active acne spots. Allow to dry and then dab a little mud mask only on the spots. Leave on overnight. You will gradually reduce the use of Benzoyl Peroxide as your skin clears until you do not use it at all. The Baking Soda works very quickly"

Is it safe to take other acne pills while taking tetracycline? I'm currently taking tetracycline for my acne, but my mom bought me some new pills. They're called "clearAc" by Hyland. I was wondering if its safe to take those pills while I'm still taking my tetracycline? By the way, the clearac has no warnings against it. Like, it only says "do not take if youre pregnant or nursing."

SZO replied: "Some claims ClearAc is a homeopathic acne regimen, and so far, I have heard positive reviews about it. Homeopathic medications seldom have side effects especially when used correctly. From its ingredients, echinacea has the only one with an adverse interaction with tetracycline. The others have none. It is still best you should take one acne regimen at a time, unless both are prescribed by the doctor so should there be any adverse effects, you would easily determine which drug caused it."

Does Tetracycline work for acne after you stop using it? I have been taking 250mg of tetracyline twice a day for acne. So far it is working very well but my question is what happens when you are finished using the doses? My pre ion runs out in march - am I acne free for life or does it come back once your done?

Darren G replied: "It'll be back bro sorry!!"

Madeline replied: "It will come back unless you already by that time have outgrown acne. I don't want to disappoint you but chances are the acne will come back as bad or maybe worse. The whole point of antibiotics is to hold you out till you outgrow acne. It doesn't get to the root of the problem by eliminating it. If you want to continue having clear skin, you have to take them infinetely."

cowboydoc replied: "It's a control, like most anti-biotics. If your not using it, it's not going to work. Once you get into that mature stage where your body will take care of the acne associated with maturing into an adult, you will be O.K."
