Weight Gain And Effexor Posts in Questions
Is there something i can take to help stop or reverse the weight gain caused by Effexor? I have been taking effexor since October and I am NOT swtching it is working great for me....the only downside is that i have gained something like 30 or 40 pounds!!!! I heard talk of some medications with counteract the symptom or that can take that weight off....ive tried diets so i know its not me just being a pig....some one help!!!!

HaphazardJoy replied: "Diet and exercise are the key there. Not necessarily that you're being a pig, but your appetite is healthier than if you were depressed and that medications you're taking may lower your metabolism a little. So keep your metabolism up, and then make up for the extra impact of calories by doing a little better eating and/or exercising. If you can, never let yourself get hungry. Eat small meals spread throughout the day to keep your tummy appeased... when you start to feel hungry, and don't feed it, your metabolism slows down a little. Eating on the other hand makes your metabolism start up a little more. Exercise does this as well, it doesn't just burn calories, but it raises your metabolism and makes you burn some extra calories even when you're not working out. Some cardio first thing when you wake up, before you eat, will do wonders in the energy and weight control areas."

Danielle G replied: "Ouch. When I was on effexor, I lost alot of weight because I couldnt bring myself to eat. As far as meds, to counteract the weight gain, talk to your doctor. Maybe he will put you on a weight loss drug."

sirdouglas527 replied: "Talk to your doctor about taking adipex to get you started losing weight until you learn to control what the meds do to your appetite. I can lose 50 pounds in about eight weeks taking adipex. The energy boost is nice, too. You will not want to eat as much and get plenty more done around the house."

Does effexor cause weight gain and can it be taken with seroquel? With no adverse side effects from the combination of the two,Thanks so much!!! you people have been a lot of help for me over the last year.I wish you all the best life has to offer.

Gabe replied: "im sure it can. effexor is an anti depressant, seroquel is an anti psychotic. numerous combinations have been taken before with a anti depressant and anti psychotic so it will be fine. seroquel in my opinion is a horrible drug. I mean it does work, yes. but side effects can be so terrible. Effexor im not sure about weight gain, but on seroquel weight gain is like inevitable."

Andy replied: "I don't know about Effexor and weight gain but I did find this interaction with Seroquel and Effexor. This doesn't mean they can't be used together but be prescribed with caution: Effexor XR (venlafaxine) and Seroquel (quetiapine) (Moderate Drug-Drug) MONITOR: Central nervous system- and/or respiratory-depressant effects may be additively or synergistically increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. MANAGEMENT: During concomitant use of these drugs, patients should be monitored for potentially excessive or prolonged CNS and respiratory depression. Ambulatory patients should be counseled to avoid hazardous activities requiring complete mental alertness and motor coordination until they know how these agents affect them, and to notify their physician if they experience excessive or prolonged CNS effects that interfere with their normal activities. Hope this helps."

My doctor gave me effexor, and I gained weight. She said effexor does not have weight gain as a side effect? I know it is the drug, since when I stop it I go back to my normal weight. I used to work out with weights, but now I have to really fight hard to keep the weight off. I think she is just "saying" it won't add to weight since she wants me on it. I gained over 40 lbs in 2 years on that stuff. Do you know if I am correct in this drug adding weight?

howie r replied: "the drug doesnt add weight over eating does. maybe it makes you lazy so you don't do as much or you just sit around and eat more... thats like saying TV makes me fat cause when I watch it I eat and when I don't watch it I don't eat. its the overeating that is making you fat.."

the_only_solorose replied: "nope, in 10years of clinical double blind studies, weight gain was one of the side effects that did NOT show up. What I think is happening is the medication is working for you, it is improving your attitude and increasing your appetite thereby. You eat more, so you gain weight. Keep a diary of what you eat over the next month or so and compare it to what you ate before you took the Effexor, I think it will become apparent to you where that weight is coming from."

marigoldkelly95 replied: "I have been on effexor for about...wow, I gues it's been like 10yrs. or something. It has never made me gain weight. I've always gained and lost bc of other issues (too much candy in the drawer at work, lol). Maybe you're on another drug that could be making you gain weight? I just haven't experienced what you have with effexor, neither has anyone I know who has taken it."

J*Mo replied: "My friend took it for about 9 months and gained 20 pounds! She switched off, and I can't remember what she takes now, but I definately remember her taking this."

bazimme replied: "I don't know personally about effector but I gained 20 POUNDS of weight in the last 1 1/2 MONTHS...I was on Zoloft. My shrink said that that isn't "typical" but also added that it's possible as not everyone has the same effect. I went off the Zoloft last night so we'll see how it goes over the next couple of weeks. please email me if you want to talk about this..I'm at ... Good luck to you."

arlanymor replied: "you are right changes in weight or appetite is a side effect--look it up in drugs.com under effexor"

destiny replied: "definetely! dr's and everybody else will not believe you, but i do. my sister also used it, and she gained a lot of weight. when she stopped using it, she battled to loose it again, and so far have not got rid of all the weight. her docter then atmitted that this will have the effect of weight gain."

Kim S replied: "I have been taking it now for one week and I have lost my appetite...."

Effexor Weight Gain. Does it affect metabolism? I was on Effexor 75mg and got off of it. I gained 30lbs-lost 20 of it and still want to lose another 10lbs of it. It's not coming off very easily. Can someone tell me if Effexor affects your metabolism?? For some reason all the weight gain is in my stomach. I drink tons of water but the tummy is still there and it looks like i am pregnant sometimes. Any ideas??

Mande replied: "Most anti-depressants can cause weight gain and they can also make it harder for you to lose weight. Just eat right, diet and exercise."

msbookie8 replied: "first introduced by Wyeth in 1993. It is prescribed for the treatment of major depression and anxiety disorders, among other uses. Although there are many many side effects! For help with your metabolism Eat BREAKFAST. walk Eat Lunch walk Eat DINNER walk take probiotics with each meal. Okra pepsin after each meal."

Tara J replied: "Changes in weight can be a side effect for most SSRIs. Some patients on Effexor XR have actually had to discontinue treatment because it made them anorexic. Personally I've never experienced any weight gain on Effexor XR, but I've heard of people losing weight or gaining weight. Paxil CR is better known for making people gain weight."

Does Effexor cause weight gain or weight loss? I just started. Over this past year i've gained like 50lbs and was hoping that this might help w/the weight gain.

x_______ replied: "i beleive it is fairly neutral this site gives you a message board of people on effexor: some have been experiencing weight loss and others weight gain, while still others have stayed the same weight-wise..."

hot_tamale replied: "I think it does but you can look it up"

watchers_shadow replied: "I take it daily haven't gained any."

KJ replied: "I take it daily and have noticed my appetite isnt as full on but thats about it."

cwgrrl7 replied: "Like most antidepressants, it causes weight gain-but I took it for a few years and stayed fairly constant."

Lauren Em replied: "It could go either way. In the first few weeks, it can take away your appetite, causing a loss. Some lucky people find that Effexor controls all their urges: smoking, alcohol, or overeating. But many people find that after a few months, they start gaining, even if they're not eating any more than usual. This type of weight can be more stubborn and harder to take off than "normal" weight gain. My GUESS is that since you're already feeling overweight, the weight might be harder to take off while you're on Effexor, even if the Effexor itself doesn't cause any further weight gain. If I were you, I would start weighing myself weekly. If you are dieting (or eating how you normally do), and find that you're still gaining or just not losing, speak to your doctor. They can tweak your dosage or perhaps put you on something else to counteract the weight gain."

Bree replied: "It can go either way. I am on the lowest dose and have been losing (10lbs the first month). I always had trouble losing weight prior to taking Effexor. Tons of people complain of substantial weight gain though... You won't know until you try it. You might want to research the withdrawal symptoms of this drug as well. Lots have had a seriously bad time trying to get off of it."

Pico replied: "I take 150mg and I've lost weight because it kills my appetite."

weight gain and effexor...? i am going on effexor for depression after a bad breakup. I'm VERY scared of weight gain!! i went on paxil 3 years ago for anxiety and i gained 30 lbs. has anyone gained a lot of weight with effexor?

julyntaylor1 replied: "my husband was a thirty waist but since taking effexor for depression he's much better mentally but now thirty eight waist so yes afraid it does."

Eden* replied: "the opposite happened to me, I had been on many different anti depressants and gained some weight. I started on efexor and somehow the weight fell off. It doesn't always mean weight gain"

fiVe replied: "I lost weight on Effexor because it caused me to completely lose my appetite. Just because one anti-depressant caused you to gain weight doesn't mean another will. It varies from person to person and if you take it for a while and are unhappy with it you can try a different one. It's not worth not even trying the med when it could be very beneficial to your mood."

Is there any way to prevent weight gain if I go back on Effexor XR? I took Effexor XR for a while, and while I found that it helped my depression and anxiety tremendously, I also found that it made me gain A LOT of weight. I just recently got rid of the extra pounds and I would really like to keep them off. Unfortunately, though, my depression and anxiety are also rearing their ugly little heads again. If I were to start taking Effexor XR again, are there any surefire ways that would help me not gain the weight back?

b8k3p replied: "Not really... perhaps you should consider other medications. Effexor is unique to the SSRI class of antidepressants, because it also works on a different brain chemical. Cymbalta works in a similar way -- maybe you'll have some luck with that."

Mr. Smartypants replied: "I'm going to the doctors to see about possibly getting off Effexor XR because of the weight gain. I mean I'm not fat but I did gain about 15lbs on it."

Susas replied: "Watch what you eat. Many gain weight, because they overeat when they take antidepressants. Effexor may cause excessive carbohydrate craving. Exercise helps too. A different anti-depressant might be another option."

Am I going to gain weight while taking Effexor XR? Effexor XR is venlafaxine HCI (37.5 mg for the first week, then 75 mg from then on), a medication for anxiety and depression. One of the side effects is loss of appetite, but I know everyone has different reactions. Anyone have any experience with this medication?

LINDSEY replied: "I just tried to stop taking Effexor XR. Make sure you're aware of the withdrawal symptoms!!I thoughtg there wassomething seriously wrong with me. I was extremely dizzy and nauseous. It worked wonders on my depression but now I have to slowly ween myself off of it."

Effexor..weight gain or loss? Do you lose or gain weight on Effexor? How long have you taken it?

pizzapants replied: "Depends if the craziness you are taking it for is associated with eating or not."

Jasper22 replied: "I have been on Effexor for 2 months now for PTSD. I have lost a lot of weight; about 30 lbs. from the disorder, and about 15 lbs. in the last 2 months. When I started Effexor, I was constantly nauseated and had no appetite. That lessened in about 5 weeks and I am now just sick to my stomach in the morning after I take it. I still do not eat much, but I think that is because I have just gotten used to eating less; needless to say, I am still loosing weight, but at a much slower rate. That is definitely my silver lining in this dark cloud. . ."

jejohnson2 replied: "I have been on it off and on for a year and have gained about 30 pounds in the process. This is not a big deal for me since I was not a big guy anyway. I think with proper diet and exercise, something that I have not been doing, this should not be a problem. I"

fiVe replied: "I was on Effexor for three or four months and lost quite a bit of weight because it totally killed my appetite. Unfortunately it didn't work for my depression so I had to try something else."

ladyrebelsw replied: "This is just my experience: I have been on the Effexor at 75-150mg on again/off again for 6-8 months now for major depression. Since I started taking it, I've experienced an increase in my appetite (like being hungary again just three hours after a meal) and have gained 20 pounds, despite attempts with weight loss plans. I've even asked the prescribing doctor (who has a lot of knowledge of the pyschiatric medications) about the weight gain after ruling out other factors and he did say that Effexor can affect a person's metabilism. I discontinued the Effexor for a time because I was no longer needing it (with my doctor's ok) and within a week after I stopped taking it, my appetite decreased and I began to loose weight. However, if anyone wishes to stop taking any medication, they should check with their doctor first. I just recommend studying up on the risks, benefits, and side effects, so you know what to expect. Of course, every individual responds differently to the various anti-depressants and may or may not experience the varying side effects and to different degrees."

wiccanangel1973 replied: "it depends on person medications affect people different and have different side effects . but look up on line if and all side effects."

More Weight Gain After Effexor ? Has anyone gained more weight after stopping Effexor ? I gained 30 pounds six months after starting Effexor (BTW, any Doctor claiming that it doesn't put on weight, or that the weight gain is a result of eating more because you are no longer depressed, is simply a trained idiot..). I stopped the drug 2 weeks ago and have gained another 10 pounds. My diet and habits have not changed....

essentiallysolo replied: "just because you don't like to hear the truth, doesn't mean it isn't the truth, the doctor is right... people gain on Effexor because their appetite improves, not because of the drug itself. And you have likely gained after you stopped it because you are using food to console yourself because of the withdrawal symptoms."

Iris replied: "I have been off of Effexor since 2007. I also gained weight-with the exact same stats as you. The ten pounds you gained getting off of them is likely water weight. Same thing happened to me and it take about 4 weeks for those 10lbs to come off. I don't know how thirsty you are but drink a ton of water-when I got off of Effexor-I drank a ton of water-for some reason it caused excessive thirst. I gained 20lbs too in about 8 months and the doc said I wasn't doing enough excerise or watching my diet LOL-whateves-yes this stuff can make you gain (some people do lose but I did not). I lost the 10lbs that I gained getting off of them fairly shortly. I lost another 10 in a year and I another 10 to go. I am being honest here and letting you know that it might come off easily for you but for myself- I still have another 10 to lose-my metabolism has changed which really sucks. Any more questions please email me-I know how you are feeling"
