Does Prozac (Fluoxetine) really causes weight loss? for people who have tried prozac, or know about it (such and doctors or whatever): does prozac cause weight loss as well as treat depression? if you know a source where it says this, as in scientifically proven, can u please add that as well? thanks

carpentershammerer replied: "hahaha hardly"

starrwoode replied: "no, its not for depression either, its for fear of people, my son in law took it, it took his fear away and then he wanted to go kill them, so we got him off prozac."

Serena replied: "Maybe. It can help a little. Bust You must consider that collateral health effects of Prozac are worse than some kilos overweight."

Dove4ever replied: "i had a realy bad experience with prozac out the blue i pulled a knife and chased my husband wanting to kiil him, and i am not a violant person they took off it i take zolofat"

youought2knowme replied: "In the company literature (the paper with the microscopic print that comes with each bottle, unless the pharmacist throws it away), there will be a table of different reactions to Prozac compared to a placebo (sugar pill). Before you decide if you want to take it or not ask a pharmacist for that info or search it on the web. Best shrink I ever had said any person can have any reaction to any drug at any given time, it's all very individual. Lilly Co. who makes Prozac was originally trying to make a weight loss drug and found there is a greater market for it as an antidepressant. It's an excellent drug, but very powerful, get your psycho meds from a qualified psychiatrist not your 'family' doctor who generally knows nothing about psychotherapuetic drugs. I took Prozac for years and found that I tended to gain weight on it, although that is not the usual response, it's more common for people to lose weight. There are much more advanced, much gentler drugs these days for depression. If you want specifically a weight loss drug, there are new ones on the market. By all means, don't try to self diagnose and don't take any medication that isn't prescribed for you. Good luck."

Ikeg replied: "I don't know any thing about the scientific part of Prozac, but was on it for about a year I believe. Yes, Prozac, as a side affect of the medication, helped me to loose about 15 pounds at first. But I didn't do any thing like diet, cut down on my eating sweets, or any thing, so when my system got used to the medication I quit loosing, and then it was just like any antidepressant. However, I went off it because I started having problems with Prozac; he then put me on Zoloft, and that didn't do any thing for weight, but was good for the depression. But now I am on Wellbutrin, and it is known for weight loss, as a side affect. It is used quite successfully for people that want to quit smoking. I've lost 20 pounds now, but not sure if it is the Wellbutrin or not."

lynnjaney replied: "NO. I was on it and gained 20 lbs, however, for the first time in my life my symptoms were controlled. Everyone's body is different and you have to work with you Dr to find what is best for you. I changed to wellbutrin and have had great results...my weight is where it used to be, but I haven't Lost anything more."

Has anyone taken lithium and not gained weight? I'm taking lithium and fluoxetine for manic depression and I'm kind of concerned about the weight gain thing. See with lithium it causes weight gain but the fluoxetine causes weight loss-so does that mean they balance eachother out? I know I'll have to make some life changes (such as making sure I eat properly and getting more exercise) to avoid the lithium weight gain but I was wondering if anyone has taken it and NOT gained weight?

pixietrix replied: "I took it for a few months and didn't gain weight, but I had to come off due to an allergic reaction. I do have a friend though who has taken it without gaining weight, but she eats really well and exercises daily. To be honest with these medications I think you need to keep a healthy lifestyle, because the weight goes on really quickly without you even noticing and before you know it your a stone heavier. I take mood stabilisers and I know that if I don't exercise and eat healthily than I would be Hugh."

DoctorJohn replied: "Lithium is a metal"

nickywireobsessive replied: "Hi- I started on lithium a month ago and was very concerned about the same issue ( see my past qs on here maybe of use to you as I got some really useful nfo from others). I have definately put some weight on but I do feel more in the mood to exercise now that my mood is more even. I have also noticed that I need to eat regularly otherwise I start to feel very unwell and sickly. As someone who in the past did not regularly in the day I have had to be careful with it - think this is perhaps why I feel heavier. I guess life changes you mentioned are the way forward - and support from others helps. Let me know how you get on and I send my best wishes x"

Olivereindeer replied: "I have taken Lithium for about a year and definitely gained weight. I thought it was nonsense that it woud occur. However I have also eaten way more and been less active. I also take an SSRI and lithium together for bipolar. Sounds like you are quite able to control your weight anyhow by using exercise and eating well (whereas I have NO control). The fact that I am remarkably better mentally is worth the weight gain."

riptide_71 replied: "Hi. I have taken lithium for 10 years and I gained weight. I exercise and try to eat right, but I still gained. Some research says that it might not be becasue of the medication, but because of the increase in the calories consumed by drinking juices and sodas. Most people on lithium drink more because of the thirst, so the weight might be attributed to drinking calorie-filled beverages."

Fluoxetine and weight? I've just been put onto fluoxetine (prozac) to treat depression, and i was worried about the possibility of weight gain? i've normally got a fairly big appetite, so would that increase even further? Has anyone had any experience in either weigh loss or weight gain? How much did you lose / gain? did you return to your orignal weight after stopping the treatment? Any answers would be appreciated

a.monet replied: "Fluoxetine (Prozac) is an anti depressive drug in a group of SSRIs and it is possible that this drug has not a significant effect on weight gain compared with the other drugs of SSRIs... Shortly, prozac causes increasing of appetite or weight gain rarely... even it can be used to treat weight gain ,especially higher than 20 mg/dosages..."
